Samsung displays.

Just saw this video, and it has left me wondering. Why do people like MKBHD, and other Youtubers claim that Samsung have the best displays in the market? Take a look at this video. Look at Samsung's whites in particular. Especially against a "budget" oriented phone like the Oneplus 6T. It doesn't even look white. Am I missing something here? Or are they all just biased and blind?

 

(*Note that I'm considering the S10e as my next phone, not a Samsung hater whatsoever)

Based of Johnathan Morrisons tests people prefer Apple's display basically all the time. But they have extensive color calibration and Android phones usually have some weird hue. Sometime it's blue or a light yellow but it's noticeable. Not every phone has it but a majority aren't comparable to Apple's

So basically he's just biased. Saying again again that Samsung has the best displays to MILLIONS of viewers, when this is clearly not the case. As he is with Pixel 3's camera. I also saw a video comparing the Exynos 9820 with SD 855. And the SD totally destroyed Exynos. What a shame for us living in Europe... Mali gpu seems almost weak next to Adreno (in benchmarks at least).

I mean it's technically all preference as someone might like a blue hue but for the most accurate according to industry standards Apple takes the cake. For mobile hardware it's very hard to benchmark across operating systems but like you said there are a lot of bias, especially in the mobile world.

it's about preferences but if you have a DSLR / Mirrorless camera and try to see the image straight from the camera in the phone the image color will have their color slightly "turn up a notch" so it'll look brighter and sometimes weird because a lot of times samsung panel has those weird color profile as stock because my friend used to have Galaxy Note 5 and every picture i take from my A7 II will have their noticeably brighter and oversaturated compared to when i look at it from my brother iPhone 6s or my Xperia Z5

Well, a few things to consider:

 

- Oneplus 6t also uses a Samsung Display

 

- The Color reproductions/-accuracy/-temperature YOU see in those Videos is affected by not one, but two different things:

1. The Camera of the Youtuber

2. The Display YOU personally watch this Video on.

 

You can NOT say anything about the whitepoint of a Display, that has been filmed, and that movie watched on another Display. Your Displays's Calibration alone will fake it out.

You can only say, how it looks compared to another one besides it, and None of this will be an absolute Claim. It can only be said relative to the other Screen.

 

 

 

Just like it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to sit on your computer/tablet/whatever, and watch a Youtube video, where someone records how his Speakers at home sound.

 

Imagine, someone has the best speakers at home you could buy... i'm not talking about lowly "high end" class, i am talking about Reference class for several thousands, maybe even ten thousands of bucks per Speaker, which will most likely sound like a Dream.

This guy plays high quality Music on it, and records it with his 140€ Entry smartphone (which has some poor shit ass microphones), puts that on Youtube, and you listen to that on your Logitech speakers.

 

The audio quality you hear is literal pure garbage. It will sound even worse than when you replay the same song directly on your Logitech speakers.

 

So long... just to make clear, why it makes no sense to evaluate something absolutely over a cheap record.

 

You're doing a similar Mistake as someone testing Speakers/headphones/headsets, when it comes to bass.

Most unexperienced people don't know the difference between alot bass (quantity), and good bass (quality).

They tend towards the model with MORE bass, even if the Quality of the bass itself is lower.

There is no "Reference-point", if the tendency goes into "More = better".

And here it seems like: The bluer, the better the white. Which is wrong. Without measurements, you can't say anything from a Video ^^

 

 

Now back to this Video:

 

- There was no measurement/Calibration before he started recording. Do both phones have the exact same Brightness? S10 looks like it has a lower absolute brightness. This alone will make a comparison impossible.

- What if the S10 whitepoint is neutral, while the Oneplus 6t's whitepoint is too blue? No measurement of the actual Color temperatures of each phones.

- Which "Mode" is used on each?

 

All these things to consider.

 

You don't go to a cheap youtube Video of a guy, who can't even set the same Brightness when he compares to phones, if you want to see how good a Display is.

You check pages that do actual neutral calibrated Measurements.
