Okay, I have yet another Xubuntu question. I have Xubuntu 12.04 installed on my mom's netbook finally, and it works great. But whenever you type, you touch the touchpad and you scew up. I was curious if there was some kind of tool to use that would disable the touchpad while you type.

General rule of thumb when it comes to Ubuntu or any Linux flavour in general : If you can't code it you're probably screwed. So i would say either Code it or ask on ubuntu forums..

That's the only thing I hate about Linux is that some things are a pain in the ass.

Are you kidding me? Linux (especially Ubuntu and Ubuntu variants) have gotten SO easy to use in the last 2-3 years.

The only people who would need to know how to code to fix their problem are power users who would know how to do it anyway, and maybe a FEW others.

But yes Ubuntu forums would probably know, just plain searching/Googling could turn up an answer as well. Using your notebook model specifically in a search could help as well.

In comparison to Linus back in the days without even a UI. Yes

In comparison to windows , Hell no.  I am a power user but i just dont want to spend time fixing my OS/Drivers etc all the time and finding replacement applications for Linux.

Linux is great but only for a very select group of people.

The one in settings waits for a good 3 seconds after I'm done typing to let me use the touchpad again. So I  don't want to use it.

Then follow the first link and set the time manually from Terminal.

Linux is great but only for a very select group of people.

I've installed Linux (Mint/Ubuntu) on a couple of laptops with no major issues. One was a MBP which had very easy instructions to find online for getting good touchpad drivers, many other drivers just figured themselves out. One crappy netbook did have issues where it would randomly disconnect on the wifi, but all the other machines were entirely usable.

As far as replacement applications go. Aside from gaming and video editing (and the gaming part is becoming less and less true) it's easy to find replacement applications or in many cases the programs you frequently use are already on Linux.

Chromium (Chrome), Firefox, Skype, Spotify, VLC, Libre Office (98% compatible with MS Office in my experience as a student writing many documents), Steam and a decent number of games are available and work on Ubuntu and Ubuntu variants (I have it working on Mint), basically any language has an IDE, Eclipse, Code Blocks, Python, Etc.

No Linux isn't perfect and support should be better than it is, but I don't think many people realize how far it has come as an alternative to Windows. Especially for casual browser-centric users.

And let those just happen to be the aplications i really need and use. Dont get me wrong linux is great and i'm sure there are many people happily using it daily. But lets face it if you need to get work done , its either done on Windows or OSX
