Clone only windows 10 on new ssd

I just bought a new ssd, mainly to speed up my OP system, windows 10. I will also be using it for a hand full of games, the remaining files will stay on my hard drive. How can I clone only windows 10 without a fresh install and then manually transfer my games at a later time?

What brand did you get? They usually have their own migration software that can do this.

https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/

No idea if it can do just Windows. Often you have to move the programs with it.

Steam can move/recheck your game directory, so you don't need to move that if you don't want to/don't have enough space on it.

There are ways to split the existing drive/choose only the Windows/Steam folder to migrate. But it depends on the software you are using.

Get the "Samsung Data Migration Software for Consumer SSD" file and, I'd advise you to look through the manual as well because it has a step-by-step guide with pictures.

Do a clean install.

It's not hard.

You will avoid plenty of issues in the future.

I definently do not want to transfer everything over, my games are not on steam. I only have 2 games I would like to transfer and neither are steam games.

If it is not necessary I would rather keep my windows settings, I've changed so many things and would hate to have to figure it all out again. I can't stand windows.

My recommendation is to uninstall the stuff you don't want to have on the SSD, and then clone it over. Windows can't really be removed from whatever environment it's in, so you can't separate it so easily and simply copy only parts to the SSD.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I'm thinking this may be the way to go. I may end up freeing some space in the process

As I've been swapping systems a lot, what I now do is install games/software to a seperate partition to Windows. So if I do move drives, I can clone windows separate to the games.

This does not help if I upgrade my PC though. I still need a full instal for that. ?

What's the easiest way to do a fresh install? Can I do this without a USB drive or CD?

I'd rather not have to buy anything else.

A USB drive costs like a dollar.

You must have some friend or family member that owns one...

It's the hassle, not money.

Yes, programs need to be reinstalled, files like pictures and documents or whatever can just be copied over.

  • 1 month later...

Hello. I know what you mean. You want to clone only Windows 10 OS to the new SSD and use the new SSD as the main boot device for OS and the old hard drive as the data storage device, right? So, what you need is just a partition cloning software, but not a disk cloning software. Here is a useful tutorial: https://www.isumsoft.com/it/how-to-migrate-windows-10-os-only-to-samsung-ssd/. I think it’s helpful to you.
