Remote pc access

Hi does anyone know any software to turn on and off my pc and access my pc completely remote without physical access or on the same network?

Well, to turn it on, you could have a VPN server setup on your router, if it supports it (ASUS routers support it), and use the VPN to connect into your network and send a WOL (Wake-On-Lan) to the machine (You will need to set this up in the BIOS, most probably). Once it's turned on, you can use RDP (Remote Desktop) to connect to it. You will need to port-forward port 3389 on your router and activate remote access in your machine.

I would use a dynamic dns on the router to make your router easy to find. Use wake on wan and forward a port through to port 9 to wake the machine (which will have to be sleeping). If you have a pro version or better of windows use remote desktop, otherwise you will have to use something else like vnc. 

 

I would recommend MagicPacket for a windows store based wake on lan & WolOn for an android version.

To confirm, that just wakes a sleeping pc, rather than turning on a powered off one?

 

(To my knowledge, there isn't really a software solution for remote power on, so I'm interested in this thread )

No, it turns it on even when it's powered off, it doesn't just wake it from sleep mode, although, it can do it too.

hmm.. just tried it on a windows 7, media pc I'm setting up, which has wake from sleep by network activated and working, but it didn't powered on.

I haven't set it up with a static ip address, so could that be a problem?

Is there something specific to the power on I should look for in bios or googling the parts?

You should look for a WOL, or Wake On Lan, option on your BIOS. Is the computer connected via ethernet? It must be connected via ethernet in order for it to work.

It is on Ethernet.

in the Bios, it's listed as Resume By PME (resume by pci/pci-e/lan/ext.usb3.0 pme)

It does wake from sleep with Microsoft Remote Desktop, but doesn't start up from power off.

That's odd. I had it set up on my server and it would turn on from power off. How are you sending the WOL signal?

Just poking at it with Windows Remote Desktop...does it need something else?

Are you trying to wake the computer using Remote Desktop? There's no way to do that through remote desktop, you have to use other tools. Your router might have a WOL function that allows you to wake up a computer through its local ipv4 address or MAC address.

It wakes from sleep, with RD.

It doesn't power on with RD...so I should look for something that can power on from off?

Yes, as I said, you need to enable WOL on your BIOS, and then to wake it up, you need to send a WOL signal. RDP will not work if the machine is not powered on at all. After enabling WOL, check on your router's settings if there is an option to send WOL signals to machines on the network. If not, you can use software such as WakeMeOnLAN .

It appears remote power on, as opposed to remote wake, doesn't work with that machine.

I found a program for my iMac that can send the Magic Packets, and it doesn't start up.

It will start up my Skytech PC (listed in my sig), so the program works.

 

As I said above, the media pc is set to be woken by PCI events, such as the lan...as in woken from sleep, and that works...I guess it just doesn't have the other abilities.
