First Build Review

Ty_Cox
Go to solution Solved by DailyProcrastinator,

Not gonna lie there's a lot I would change in this build.

Spec wise it is very overkill for 144Hz 1080p but you can get a 120Hz+ 1440p monitor down the road.

You are overspending in unnecessary areas and sacrificing your budget in important areas like your motherboard.

I added a far better cooler, a better motherboard, RGB ram that is only 200MHz slower which no person would ever notice ($20 cheaper), a cheaper and faster NVME m.2 drive, an excellent GPU that is $100 cheaper, a better case in every sense, IDK why you would go with an outdated full tower case. Also, don't get a garbage external hard drive, slower transfer speeds and they are nowhere near as reliable as 3.5" internal hard drives. Also added an equally as good PSU for $15 less.

Can you guys review this build to make sure I am not buying something I shouldn't. 144hz 1080p and also looking to use VR headsets.

Here is the parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7jfjV6

Any suggests or concerns? Thanks in advance.

GPU is totally overkill for 1080p 144hz

Do you intend on using the 2TB external drive as mass storage? Pls don't

Also, do you need a case that big?

You can get a better PSU..

This one is WAY better AND without a mail in rebate.

Also, like Slottr said, that GPU is overkill.

I would personally get a better motherboard, I wouldn't expect that one to OC well.

And this RTX 2080 at $660, adds up to $1830. The rest of the money can go to a official Windows 10 license or a 9900k, your choice.

9th gen 9700k instead of 8th gen 8700k because of solder (speed is the same at the same frequency), helps with thermal problems (unless you're willing to delid the 8700k)

Big air cooler to handle the heat, didn't go liquid because I don't know if that's an issue for you, otherwise go with the Corsair H115i pro 280mm liquid cooler

Much better board

cheaper memory to fit the budget and underneath the air cooler, though 3000MHz Trident Z RGB is a viable option and a better value choice as well with minimum performance difference compared to 3200MHz ones

Changed SSD to spend less money for the same capacity (is a bit slower but not noticeable)

Internal HDD saves money, even internal hdd + SATA to usb enclosure is cheaper than a 2.5" portable HDD

case that's smaller with decent airflow

cheaper PSU that's good quality and modular. Don't need anywhere that much wattage but it's priced among 650w units, I dont argue with prices

An airflow optimized fan as rear exhaust

3 pressure optimized fans as  intake
