I am looking to upgrade but keep my DDR3 ram because I have a lot of and a comparable kit in DDR4 would be extremely expensive for 32GB

So I need to know which intel 115X socket generations support ddr3 and which processor are supported on those boards as well as which chipsets are overclockable I know z series boards are but those are way expensive usually and I know h81 boards support overclocking now so I am looking to see which other ones do.

I am upgrading from and AMD 8150 @ 4.5ghz

Do you need 32GB? Chances are 16GB of DDR4 is still good, unless you have a specific use case that requires lots of ram.

LGA 1150 is the last generation to support DDR3, unless you get this:

you lose OC support but you can get a current gen i5, unfortunately this board only has 2 dimm slots though.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

The excess ram is for editing long high res video,

I don't have a lot a budget for the needed upgraded and waiting is not really an option so I was going for the most bang for the buck option which appeared to be an 1150 series overclocked with my 32GB of ram.

A non overclocked i7 would still be nice, so a B85 board with your full compliment of ram would still be decent. I highly recommend not settling for half measures, it'll be an endless cycle.

I seem to recall watching a video, might even be an LTT video, about a Chinese motherboard that works with 9th gen CPUs and ddr3. It wasn't as fast as the standard DDR4 counterparts but it worked

Can't recall exactly.

i5-14600KF // 120x38MM Cooler Master AIO // B760i // 64GB DDR5 6000 // PNY RTX 5070 // Cooler Master NCORE 100 Max // Cooler Master V SFX-850 Gold // UWQHD AOC Display

it seems there are set of z170 boards from asus and asrock that support ddr3

that said normally I agree on half measures but my editing rig is dead and I don't want to buy another am3+ board for it

I saw the video plutosaurus and seem to make more sense to go with an older board

Sell the ddr3 for $80 - $100. Buy 2 of these kits for $160.

https://www.rakuten.com/shop/adata/product/AD4U300038G16-DS10/

It will cost you $60-$80 to change ram. Don't bury yourself in a dead platform. If you have a microcenter near you you can get a ryzen CPU and mobo combo for a lot less than a used 115x system.

I believe it would be a nice purchase to buy a budget Ryzen setup with room to expand. What are your thoughts on something like that? 16GB now with 2 free slots is pretty nice.

Unfortunately it's a tough decision, you've got no time, no money, and high requirements. One of these things has to change, either less strict requirements, higher budget, or more patience.
