Upgrade path advice

rpgdude

My current setup is a Lenovo motherboard, i5 4570, 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz, AMD RX580 8GB, 2x500GB SSD. I have $500 to spend. I can upgrade to an ASUS Prime X470, AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, 16GB DDR4 3200MHZ or I can buy just the RTX 2070. It is for gaming, but my CPU and ram are aging. Advice?

If you're going for high refresh rate gaming then upgrade the CPU. If you're going for high resolution gaming upgrade the GPU.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You're going to face a bottleneck either way. I would just sit for the new Ryzen chips to come out and pick up one of those.

I have myself a i7 4790k and an gtx1070ti. cpu is still good and you do not have to switch so many parts. You could go for a used 4790k and buy a better gpu if you sell your old parts

btw which resolution and fps rate of your monitor?

4790k is fine with its 8 cores but OP only has 4 with his i5. You will bottleneck a 1070, nevermind a 2070. You would want to upgrade the CPU first to avoid a CPU bottleneck which would cause stuttering in games.

wait, what?

4770k or xeon equivalent is a option too, would make a great combo with a 2060 or vega 56 for example

Upgrade the mobo for sure, because proprietary stuff can be a pain for upgrades. Wait on the graphics card until later in the year, because old nvidia cards might drop in price, and AMD might release new GPUs. The RX 580 is a solid card

4790k = 4 cores/8 threads (has hyperthreading)

4570 = 4 cores/ 4 threads (no hyperthreading)

4790k can do 8 things at once, 4570 only 4. Makes a big difference.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Thanks all, think I'll upgrade the Mobo, CPU, and Ram when the new Ryzen come out.
