Ryzen 5 2600 or i7 8700k?

I am going to build a new pc with the new GTX 1660ti and I was wondering, is it best to get a i7 8700k or Ryzen 5 2600? Is the price you overpay for a i7 worth it?

Or should I get something else?

Thank you!

The 8700k is only 350 bucks and you can get a nice overclock on it, like at least 4.6Ghz.

Hi guys, my budget is 1000$. The i7 fits in but idk if my gpu is going to bottleneck it. I won't say that 350$ is "only". I am planning to stream. I checked some reviews and the i7 goes up to 5Ghz but the Ryzen only goes to 3.9.

Both will do very well when gaming but If you do other stuff like streaming video editing go with the R5 2600 or R7 2700X and save more money for gfx or faster memory for me I'm getting the R5 2600X 4.2Ghz.

It depends on what you want to do, but seems like you're on a budget so I would opt for Ryzen (Don't forget that the board for an 8700K is pretty expensive too). But you do want to have faster RAM (3200MHz or higher ideally) for Ryzen. It varies depending on CPU, but you can usually at least get 4.0 GHz on all cores on a 2600.

However, if you have some software that's strictly single thread like me, you'll want to opt for the Intel. It's why I'm going with an 8700K myself instead of Ryzen (despite Ryzen being a hell of a deal for the price).

No, its not. Especially since you can't upgrade.

I'd get the Ryzen 1600 or 2600 with a good board and save money for the sucessor to the Ryzen, the 3000 series is to hit the market in like 4 Months and seems to be on par with the 9900K with the possibility of half the price.

"only" 350 bucks. Bad joke. Sorry but how the heck can 350 bucks be "only"?!

That's almost the amount some people get each month and have to live off.

And the 2600 is like 200€ less...

So less than half...

The 8700k is worth it in three scenarios over the 2600:

1. You pair it with a decently fast graphics card and a high refresh 1080p monitor.

2. You do not plan on upgrading every year like everyone talks about doing. The 8700k will probably give you one more generation of 60fps 1080p GPUs in its overall lifetime than the 2600, two on the 1600. It is faster now, and it be more obviously faster than the 1600/2600 in 3 years.

3. You got it when it launched.

It is my personal believe that people by and large do not upgrade (and generally do not greatly benefit from upgrading) every generation, or every other generation, but most often every three+ generations.

At this point, I'd say wait for Zen 2, and see what happens when the dust settles.

People go on and on about upgrade path but I got my 8700k on day one and i haven't upgraded it since, with no sign of slowing down. $200 more upfront investment, over a year of excellent, untouchable gaming performance.

1. Spend within your means

2. Come up with a budget, and stick to it

3. If you have a set allocation for the CPU, compare products of the same price

I never advise this... you can end up not being satisfied if you build based on budget rather than on desired outcome. Saving up longer if needed to end up with exactly what you want is more rewarding to me.

  1. figure out exactly what power/performance you want from your new build
  2. make a list of parts required to achieve said goals
  3. save until you have cash to pay for those parts

Why? The i7 8700K is more capable at streaming than the Ryzen 5 2600 in fact you get iGPU QuickSync for streaming even with the i7.

Not to mention with a GTX 1660 Ti OP should just stream using NVEC instead either ways making CPU redundant for that end while the I7 will still give better performance.

Now, I don't think the i7 8700K is needed... but it's obviously the all around best solution at the cost of a higher price tag.

just playing devil's advocate here but if you work at a burger chain here (In N Out for example), their minimum pay is $12 per hour here (not a high income / high cost of living area in general).

At $12 per hour, say you work a standard 40 hour work week, and there are ~ 4.5 weeks per month that's $2160 before taxes, say you're taxed overall 25% (which is probably a little high for that income level) you take home $1,620 per month = what you have to 'live off of' so to speak.

I don't imagine most folks at that point in life are paying for a family on their own, so assuming they're in a more typical scenario of say just out of high school so maybe paying for rent / food / utilities (phone, electricity, natural gas, etc) I'd still bet that they would have more than $350 per month left over assuming they weren't being wasteful like eating at fast food restaurants every meal etc.

I'm an advocate of "save a little bit longer and buy what you really want" but even I know most minimum wage jobs aren't 40 hour workweeks

fair point - those can vary wildly depending on location, restaurant, and individual.

I had a girl cousin who worked 25 hours per week as a waitress while putting herself through university; it was a somewhat higher-end place, she was objectively fairly attractive and very outgoing... told me she was averaging about 50k per year doing that. She finished school and became an elementary school teacher and is still not making that much now after ~ 10 years.
