200Gigs of lost HDD space?

Jagzz

As seen here on Spacesniffer:

And no, i won't delete the anime i've watched if i have 200Gigs of empty space in there :D

I have some error logs from Spacesniffer:

WARN  16:23:29 - Unable to examine D:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-2137894843-2346751290-932353962-1001 (Access is denied. - code 5)

WARN  16:23:29 - Unable to examine D:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-4013714893-2621192682-4106286696-1000 (Access is denied. - code 5)

WARN  16:23:36 - Unable to examine D:\System Volume Information (Access is denied. - code 5)

I think the "$RECYCLE.BIN" is self explanatory.
So are those old deleted files or what, if so, how can i delete them?

If I had a dollar for all the shows I've watched for the plots....I'd have a new hard drive to put them on.

CCleaner will get rid of all your useless stuff taking up space, I'd try that once and rescan :)

It's a 2 TB drive, no? the elusive GB might be lost in formating, though I think it looks like a lot of loss. I don't have a 2TB drive to compare it with though :S

I use a java-thingy JDiskReport when I try to get rid of files, and I've never seen something like you're experiencing, neither have I ever tested spacesniffer.

I found an old thread with similar errors and with a combination of the tips supplied here the OP solved the problem http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=232277

I hope this helps you out :)

It's not the "loss" of space in formating. The drive is already shown as a 1.81Tb drive, and ~1.6Tb has been used. The rest 200Gb are the hidden files.

I'll take a look at some of the stuff in that thread (i actually found it earlier today too ;) )

Earlier i ran chkdsk on the HDD but it didn't bring any results.

Probably worth mentioning that today i reinstalled windows. Could the hidden files be something from the previous install?

Have you tried cleaning up old install files? Right click the drive with your OS, properties, diskcleanup (or whatever it's called).

Should take a couple of minutes and you get a list of stuff you can have windows chuck in the bin. One of the options is called, Windows update-cleanup,

along with a some other things, see if you can get rid of some of the stuff there. I think I got rid of 40 GB worth of crap there, and CCleaner doesn't touch it.
