Bad Sectors on HDD

Go to solution Solved by SupaKomputa,

If this is new, try claiming the warranty. bad sector is not a good thing, avoid as possible.

If you cannot get the warranty, you can still use that hdd, for something non crucial, like moving files from computers.

to do it you can create a partition pass the bad sector mark, what you do is skipping the bad sector part so it is not used.

i see in the picture, the bad sector is around 15%, so you start the partition at 16% of the drive, so you still can use 85% of the drive.

I've done it in some of my drive and it still working today, just for moving movies that is.

I have been having a lot of problem on by HDD, it used to completely breakdown in a few days on installation of any OS, I tried Windows 7,8,8.1,10 and even Linux Mint, Ubuntu but the same thing happened. I have formatted it completely after backing up my data. I installed Windows 8.1 very hardly on it and when I checked for bad sectors on it, I found 4 bad sectors in it when I tested it with EaseUS Partition Wizard. I heard a lot of people that if you have bad sectors in a HDD, its not good. I still have warranty on this disk. But I also read some people saying that there are always couple of bad sectors already while manufacturing. I am confused that should I replace it and if I do it will it be any helpful.

I have attached an image of the complete scan for you to review

Usually factory bad sectors are mapped and given a "no-go" flag, meaning that they won't come up in smart software. It means that yes, you should replace the drive. Install CrystalDiskInfo and use it to see whats going on. Mabye post a screenshot of that.

I was going to the vendor and was going to claim it but due those comments I mentioned on other sites a bit confused about what to do.

Yeah I'd just replace the drive, you could keep it has a media store (such as movies, or anything not important). I have an external HDD with 400 reallocated sectors and regularly use it to move files between computers. Usually you don't want to give hard drives benefit of the doubt (in critical applications that is).

No probs, go with Toshiba for your replacement. Never had a problem. Get a E300 from them. Seagate don't have the best track record for reliability (they might be better now).

Today I went to exchange the HDD but he said that he has to check its health and was saying its normal for a HDD to have C5 C6 error which was reported by crystal diskinfo. I was not sure what he meant by checking its health, he further added that if the health is above 75-80% he will not give me a replacement. Is there any such rule like this?

Where did you get the drive from?

I got it from a local store.

But he provided me with a replacement, but it is a bit weird thing that  I think he gave me a Surveillance drive (I think). Its name is WD 5000AVDS. I googled its name and it showed me the same drive on Amazon, and its specs looked like a surveillance drive, but I am not quite sure about it.

I tried than installing windows and even lightest weight Linux I could get, heck I even tried installing windows 7, but they are all displaying the same problems as my old drive was displaying. Could you help me?
