In certain communities it's still a normal but it was more of a fad that came and went.

It is using progressively finer sandpaper to achieve a mirror like finish on the CPU and the heatsink.

Both surfaces are then perfectly flat making for a better contact and better cooling.

Nothing to see here - move along.

basically use sandpaper, and scratch off some layers of the aluminium.

I know making the cpu uneven doesnt do much but doing it with sandpaper is a bit over the top for me.

no idea what that means or does

Abraising the top of the IHS so that the heatsink/waterblock can lift up the CPU by forming a vacum when it is pressed on. It lets you use no thermal paste, and gives better temps.

It does work though.

I have tried it with a spare 3570k and it was a very minimal difference. It looks cool though when done.

Did you do just the cpu or heatsink as well.

It does look cool but only you will ever know.

Just lapped the top. Didn't play with the IHS since the temps were pretty normal on it.

No. My desktop CPU stays plenty cool and my laptop CPU doesn't have an IHS of course.
