Need a second opinion on FX-8350 liquid cooling

Get the MasterLiquid Lite 120 or stick with the Hyper 212 Evo? Or get some other cooler?

Hello,

I am currently running a

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3

AMD FX-8350

16 GB DD3 RAM

2 x Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB running in SLI mode (yes, DifferentSLIAuto)

512 GB SSD.

After setting up DifferentSLIAuto, my CPU usage has increase drastically to the point where games are using 90% of my CPU which they were using 60% before.

I guess that's the price I pay for DifferentSLIAuto on 2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots.

However, I will say that I am running the AMD FX-8350 underclocked at 3.4 GHz instead of it's usual 4 GHz because the Hyper 212 Evo cannot handle 4 GHz.

I remember, I used to play Battlefield 3 on this machine (except that I had a AMD Radeon 7850 back then), and if I was running the CPU on 4 GHz, it would hit 95°C and the system would power off.

Currently I get 25°C on dile and upto 48°C while gaming which at 90% CPU usage. (Underclocked)

So, I plan on bringing it back to 4 GHz but I will have to look into better cooling solutions.

How much do you think will liquid cooling out perform air cooling?

I am currently thinking about the MasterLiquid Lite 120 which is probably the cheapest one available out there.

Do you guys think it will out perform the Hyper 212 Evo?

Should I stick with Hyper 212 Evo? (But the CPU is bottle necking the GPUs).

Let me know your suggestions.

You should be able to get 4ghz easily on a 212. There is probably something wrong with the mounting or voltage or something. I have ran 4.4ghz on a much worse cooler. Id remount and repast the cooler and check mounting pressure.

The 120mm aio really isn't that much better than a 212

Yeah the aios aren't going to preform too different. But if you end up wanting to get one Enermax has some cheap ones that I have been using in 2 builds for about a year and a half in one. And a lot longer in another

dont waste money on an AIO. if you want a new cooler, look for a Used scythe mugen 4/5, they should be 40-50$.

I run a 120mm AIO on a Ryzen 7 1700 (65w tdp processor) ZERO problems runs cold as ice.

I run an FX 8350 on a 240mm AIO on an FX 8350 (125w tdp processor) ZERO problems runs cold as ice (14 fans in my case...my temps aren't norm for this CPU).

My opinion is the Hyper 212 EVO will LIKELY perform the same as a 120mm AIO.

Once you push an sort of Overclock, it will destroy both.  My 240mm struggles when I start turning up the volts (building a custom loop with 2x240mm and 1x120mm rad for this purpose - it will be cold...and it will have tons of juice put to it!)

Im just not sure the 120 can keep up over hours of gameplay once you hit Thermal Equilibrium where-as the air cooler will reach thermal equilibrium sooner and you would know for sure.  Is the Hyper 212 EVO even rated for 125w?

Really?

Then what could be wrong?

It's been like this since the first day I got it. Got BF3 along with the entire machine, though I had a AMD Radeon 7850 back then. I have opened it multiple times, reapplied thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5), no change.

I see. Reading the comments I feel I should stick with the Hyper 212 Evo..... Hmmmmm

Mounting pressure is my bet. Take the cooler off and put it back on and make sure its tight and the thermal paste is spread out well by the pressure.

My 212 handles the 8370 oc'd to 4.5ghz (1.344v) just fine. 2 fan setup, push/pull towards rear of case.  Reapply paste, and make sure cooler is properly tightened. Never reach more than 56c cpu. Did upgrade to h100i v2 for fun. Huge difference, but motherboard didnt like the lack of airflow to vrm

I have removed and placed it back again over 10 times since the day I got it, 5 years ago.

I don't think that's the problem.

Maybe I should give it another go. And put in one or two more fans on the CPU case. (It already has two on the left side.

Wow, that's amazing.

Just remember - each case is different and this is a Space Heater chip (I use one and rock one daily even though I could use a Ryzen 7 if I wanted.) - good chip just needs lots of airflow.  I keep mine ICY cold.  Takes 240mm AIO and 12 additional fans in the case moving air to achieve my temps in F U torture tests.
