Can a i7-9700k run on a Z370 motherboard?

Okay. So I’m planning on upgrading my CPU from a super hot i7-8700k to the new i7-9700k. I know the the cpu is compatible with the motherboard, a ASUS ROG Stric Z370-F, and the socket works and it’s all fine there. But will I run into any issues with bios? Or say if I try to overcloak would I lose some effeciency?

you can if you update your bios with the 8700k first, a 9700k is a sidegrade from a 8700k though, nothing downclocking voltage/200mhz won't solve.

you will need to update BIOS before swapping CPU.

also i wouldnt upgrade the CPU as they are more or less identical in performance. in almost every workload including gaming they are more or less identical. i wouldnt suggest upgrading.

if you want to do some upgrades. look at delidding the 8700k. other than that i would suggest saving your money as you wont see any changes after you swap (its a sidegrade)

Why? The 9700k will likely still be just as hot as the 8700k. The upgrade from an 8700k > 9700k isn't worth the $400.

What CPU cooler are you using? If your temperatures are too high, upgrade the cooler.

Going from a 6 core 12 threads to 8 core 8 threads, in my opinion, isn't an upgrade, especially if they feature nearly the same performance per core.

You might want to lap the IHS of the 8700K or even delid, but if the CPU has a warranty it would be voided by doing so.

Ah, well that’s a bummer, although that does save me $600 AU. So that’s a bonus. I’ve been thinking of delidding for a while now but I thought this would just be easier and save me the work and risk of destroying my CPU. Cause why not. And if it fails, well I was planning on going up anyway as well go up anyway

I’m using a NZXT Kraken X72. I say it’s hot cause I really banked out on the CPU lottery :/

its just the thermal interface material.

like they say on Chinese forums: Intel Toothpaste factory.

Yeah I’m seeming to lean toward deliding. I mean the end it’s cheaper if I don’t screw it up so yeah

well. the paste isnt terrible. its just thickly pasted and the spacing between ihs and die is bad.

similar issue on the 9000 series where the solder is quite thick. though that also suffers from using a thicker die compared to the 8000 series for various reasons. biggest one probably is higher yields while soldering.

Or should I actually just go for that little extra cost and go for the i9? Or would that just be stupid

Then turn your OC down? Any OC is going to introduce heat, and pushing a poorly overclocking chip past it's comfort zone will introduce exponentially more heat.

The i9 would be an upgrade, but I somehow doubt you actually need it. The 8700K is still high end and it will be for the next few years, no real need to upgrade.
