Want to upgrade CPU

crazysteve240

I want to upgrade my PC's CPU since it seems to be the limiting factor in most of the games I play. Unfortunately, I'm on a pretty old platform (LGA 775) and to upgrade the CPU I will probably have to upgrade the motherboard and RAM as well (don't want to upgrade the graphics card though). I'm not really sure what's the sweet spot in terms of price-to-performance in the used market right now and my budget is $200-$300 CAD. Any suggestions?

Current PC:

Asus P5QL-VM-EPU Motherboard

Intex Xeon X5460 @ 3.4 GHz

Sapphire HD 7870 GHz Edition

6GB DDR2 RAM

Hyper 212 LED

Thermaltake TR2 600W

For that budget you can probably find something from the Intel 4th gen CPUs, so maybe a H81/Z87 board, 4th gen i5 (i5-4570?), and 8/16 GB of DDR3 RAM.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Laptop:

HP Omen 15 | AMD Ryzen 7 5800H | 16 GB 3200 MHz | Nvidia RTX 3060 | 1 TB WD Black PCIe 3.0 SSD | 512 GB Micron PCIe 3.0 SSD | Windows 11

Some Ryzen 4core8threads CPU (1500X), an B350 board and 2x4GB ddr4 should be doable.

On the used market - Haswell i7. But that's a ddr3 platform and I wouldn't recommend since you already have to replace everything including the ram.

something like this would be a good investment since you can upgrade the CPU later if you wanted to, but the 2200G should be plenty for an HD 7870.

but you've never mentioned, what's your PSU?

yeah it's no problem then, i chose a more expensive motherboard so you could upgrade to a better CPU in the future, AM4 socket is supported with new CPU's until 2020, but you can get a cheapo motherboard for the 2200G since it isn't power hungry, but upgrading to a higher power CPU might be an issue.

or you could get 8GB of RAM instead.
