If you're going to run FreeNAS as a VM, I would not use Ubuntu as the bare metal OS. Definitely not if you're going to use VMWare Player (is that even compatible with Linux? Not sure). I would either go full out and run ESXi or Proxmox as your bare metal OS, and run both Ubuntu and FreeNAS as VM's, or use Linux's native KVM Hypervisor.
