Greetings everybody!

I've been running linux for over a year now and i have to say that im very pleased, how ever, i feel like it's time to move on.

Ever since i started working some where new i started using mac for work, and i really like the OS, but not the hardware.

I already have a pc at home that is my main work horse (CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Nvidia Gtx 960 and a gigabyte b450mds3h motherboard) and would like to turn it into a hackingtosh.

Would like to install mojave (and it is possible) but i'm afraid to destroy something since i'm not that comfortable poking sticks at something and hoping that it works, what are the main pit falls to look out for? is it even possible and does some one have tips and tricks perhaps?

I don't completely understand the guide (this one) so figured i should probably ask first.

Thank you for your time, and have a nice day ❤️

You won't break anything, the worst that could happen is it won't work. However, Nvidia GPUs don't have recent drivers on OSX, I don't believe the 900 series is supported.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

not sure if hackintoshes work on Ryzen, and im 50% sure they require an AMD gpu as all current apple devices use intel core + amd radeon.

AMD-OSX exists, but I forget if they have kernels available for Ryzen.

@HayHay got macOS(Sierra, I think) to work on Ryzen with the exception of networking.

AMD-OSX.com

This forum helps me a lot with hackintoshing an AMD.

Just follow one of the success stories that closely meet your hardware specs.

Take note that the motherboard is the biggest factor wether you will boot to OSX.

I suggest you try High Sierra first and update Mojave manually.

Will do! Thanks! :D

Side question, is it possible to update to mojave later on or does that require a full re install and jumping though the hoops again?

I got everything working perfectly with my BIOSTAR x370 motherboard.

The only thing not working is Final cut as it needs Intel IGPU to work properly as Quicksync.

They have official drivers for 9th series.

Pascal is also supported on the newest drivers, i've used it for my old 1050ti.

An alternative, as your hardware is modern enough, run the OS X in a VM. Less bother setting it up and you don't wipe out your existing *nix install if things go south with the VM

I'm doing hackintosh from 10.5 (still has the cds), if you have vanilla method (not using installers), usually it will work.

But doing vanilla is a pain on the ass, if you screw just a little, you have to redo everything from the start.

Hackintosh is trial and error, you will have to be prepared if something happens, you need to do it all over again.

I've abandon my high sierra for something like that, looking forward to mojave.

Use it as a playground, nothing too serious.

I've been running it for a bit in a vm indeed, but only on my laptop since that did have many problems running on amd (funny enough), but prefer to go for bare metal since i dont like how vm's handle multiple monitors

Yes there are VM images out there, will give you a quick taste of the osx on your pc, but, it doesn't have gpu accelerations, so your vram is limited to like 7mb, just enough to run 32bit display.

Just remember that the drivers that are required (the NVIDIA stand alone drivers) are required for at least pascal, maybe others, and they do not work in Mojave at the moment. Just an FYI.

yes you have to download it manually after you boot with no gpu acceleration.

after that you need to address some configs in the cameleon bootloader, but i forgot which one.

luckily i've upgraded to rx580.

I suggest running High Sierra (because of no Nvidia drivers as others have said) on a VM with GPU-passthrough instead, you should have near-native performance. AMD hackintoshing has way too many pitfalls to consider IMO

EDIT: looks like your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, if you decide to go through this route you'll need to get a separate GPU for either the host or the guest.

🙂

such as, i don't know if that even existed in consumer vm.
