Planning a new ultrawide gaming rig

jj9987

I am planning a new PC, purely for gaming on my ultrawide display (3440x1440 60FPS). I am targeting a small form factor (so, mini-ITX) and not looking for high refresh rates. I already have a case. For GPU, I am thinking a 1070 or if I find a good deal, then a 1080 or 1080Ti. I am mostly looking at used parts for CPU and GPU, maybe also motherboard and PSU (if I can find good deals from known good sellers), but definitely getting a new SSD.

I need advice on choosing a CPU and motherboard. It has to be Mini-ITX. I used to be more on the Intel side, but Ryzen seems to have matured more now, so I am not ruling that out either. I have completely lost track of all the chipsets and CPUs and their compatibility etc. No peripherals needed. For storage, I am planning a single 500-512 GB SATA SSD, should be enough for my needs.

Budget is around €1k. It's purely for gaming, don't need anything too high-end (so no i9-9900k). I am located in Estonia. And yes, I do have an eGPU, but I need to return the laptop I was using it with and am too lazy to bother with gaming on my MBP.

Do you need a PC right now? Because Ryzen 3000 series is around the corner and it's looking like it'll provide a massive perf bump over current gen stuff.

Not in very much of a rush, but will be keeping eyes open.

I do intend to save some money by going with used parts, so maybe even a 6700k or 7700k.

Honestly, unless you find a good deal locally, used prices for those chips aren't low enough to be worth it IMO, especially factoring in the cost of a used z170/270 board.

9600k is available for 240 used, 290 new, 6700k 210 used, 324 new.

So yea, the prices are changing, but will keep my eyes open and look for best I can get, be it new or used.

Hi

For 3440 X 1440 a GTX 1080 is what I consider the minimum for that resolution.

Then I got my 3440 X 1440 monitor I had a GTX 980 ti(980 ti=1070) and it was it the 50s most of the time. My GTX 1080 was in the 60s all the time.

I now use 2 GTX 1080 tis but one averages in the 80s most of the time.

For CPU go i7 8700k. It has the cores and the IPC for all games. Mine runs like a dream on my 3440 X 1440 rig.

If you want Ryzen wait of 2. Then Ryzen will have the cores and high IPC as well.

Go with a 1tb SATA SSD.  Prices have gone down. The last 1tb Crucial SSD I bought only cost me $140.

How powerful of a power supply would you recommend for 8700k and a 1080?

EDIT: Ryzen 3 is estimated to launch somewhere between May and July. Not sure if I'm gonna wait that long.

I used a 750 watt but a 650 would do. For 2 GTX 1080 tis I us a 860.

If you can't wait go i7 8700k or R7 2700x and upgrade later.

I think the i7 9700k is priced too high for what it is so I can't add it.

If you wait for the new Ryzen stuff you might be able to score some of the current gen stuff for a deal from people upgrading to the new cpus

So, current plan on the parts after doing some research:

i5-9600k for 270 €

ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-I GAMING for 120 €

Crucial 2x8GB 2400 MHz RAM for 100 €

Corsair TX750M for 90 €

Still undecided on the GPU and SSD, waiting on some offers. Already have a Cougar QBX case, got for 40 €.
