Hi,

i bought second handed GTX 970 for brothers computer.

But his power supply can handle it (when is GPU in full load HDDs getting disconnected).

I resolve this issue with decreasing power target to 80%, after that seems everything ok and

i can't even tell difference in fps between 100% and 80%.

Can something go wrong if i keep power target at 80 % ?

It's not the problem of keeping the power target at 80%, but using a crappy PSU.

a gtx970 uses around 160w , a good 300/350w may even run it at full load.

whats your gpu?

gtx970 can handle lots of games very well at 1080p, depends on games and settings, it could have massive headroom left

I know its crappy PSU, it is some shitty LC POWER 420 :D

http://www.lc-power.com/en/product/netzteile/standard/lc420h-12-v13/

But it was enough to run 560 Ti, now he gets some hard times with GTX 970 Strix.

This solution is only temporarily till i get better psu, which will not burn our house.

Just wanna know if lower power target can somehow hurt the GPU or other electronics on VGA PCB.

I believe if you set the lower target, it will underclock the card. Might be worth doing that manually?

For the card? Sure. It would be safe at any percentage. Even 200, if the bios supported it.
