Hi,

I have a Lenovo W540 Laptop.

I recently replaced the standard "hybrid" drive with a Samsung 860 EVO SSD because the system was getting ridiculously slow.

The replacement drive had the desired effect in terms of boot up times and running speed, but, ever since i have been getting BSOD "critical process failed" errors when i put the system under any sort of load, e.g. running a couple of VM's and also occasionally when just idling.

I can also replicate the effect by running burn in tests, although the amount of time it takes to blue screen is variable... Universally though, the corner of the laptop where the cooler is generally feels hot when it dies.

My gut feeling is that its overheating that is causing the problem.

My question is this: -

Would the SSD throwing data at the processor faster than the old drive, and the corresponding increase in processor operations, be likely to cause the overheating problem?

Cheers,

PJ

Highly unlikely. First thing I'd test is your RAM. Go get MemTest86+ and test it out. Report back.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Yeah, i thought that too but I have already tested the ram extensively, both with the built in system ram test accessed on boot and 10 reps of ram torture test (several times) in passmark burn in test software... didn't find a problem.

Have you tried downloading new thermal compound?

M.2 slot SSDs run hot but 2.5s don’t usually cause issues. It’s possible it’s just exacerbated an issue with the rest of the system.

A bit like installing the SSD in my father in laws laptop. It became usable again but identified that he didn’t have enough RAM and the CPU wasn’t really up to using Chrome so had to switch to a different browser.
