8TB + 1TB drive

Hi,

I recently bought Zyxel NAS326 and I have two drives in it: WD Red PRO 8TB and WD Blue 1TB.

My question is if I can somehow make 7TB partition as "Basic" space and make RAID1 from rest of 8TB drive + whole 1TB drive.

This is not possible in hardware raid. It will at the most result in a 1TB array in RAID 1.

Either use the 1TB as manually backed up storage or buy another 8TB for mirroring.

Ok, thanks for info  I naively thought it would go some way and if I lost one of the two drives at least I would not lose important data I would store on that 1TB partition

Thats how you get it to basic i think, i done it with raid 0,1,5.

This CAN be done. But not with standard RAID, and even if you do it, it's not ideal.

 

Basically, if you use something like FlexRAID, you can partition the 8TB HDD into two "drives". A 7TB "drive", and a 1TB "drive".

 

You can then take the 1TB partition, and "mirror" it with the actual 1TB HDD. Performance won't be great though.

 

You'd be much better off simply using the 1TB HDD as a backup target, and backing up any important data on the 8TB drive that you can't afford to lose.

 

And as always kids, remember:

RAID is NOT a backup!

It can be done with Microsoft Storage spaces, and I'm pretty sure Synology has a RAID type that would do it as well... but I'm not finding much on Zyxels.

 

Can you screenshot the section where you setup RAID?
