Older laptop CPU upgrade

Since i am on a budget, and can't afford to get a new pc (and new pcs in my budget are usually trash) I would like to upgrade the cpu in my older Dell Vostro 3560 laptop. It currently has an i5 3230m in a BGA 1023 socket. The chipset is an HM77 chipset, and I would like to upgrade to the most powerful that this device supports. If possible, I would like to get a quad core i7 in my laptop. My budget is around $150 for a  used CPU.

Looks like it was originally offered with up to a Core i7-3612QM, so that would probably be a safe bet to stay within power  / thermal limits.

do you know how to actually remove a bga chip?

He does say BGA in his post but looking up the Dell Vostro 3560's motherboard shows an actual socket, so he may have just been mistaken.

I must have typed wrong. The CPU is user replaceable. (I have checked) I'm not quite sure what it is called, but the pins are on the CPU like a ryzen, not on the motherboard like an intel CPU

i wouldnt trust that whatever cpu you buy will be compatible

seeing as laptops do not have to follow any standards for form factor or compatibility you may very well find the same motherboard in a similar machine with a higher end cpu , but the machine could be using totally different firmware.

just keep in mind even with proper reseaerch theres a chance whatever cpu you buy might not be compatible

Since you double-checked and stated that yes, it is user up-gradable, you have a few options.

 

It seems that the laptop has an upper-TDP limit of 35W, as that is the max that the laptop shipped with. If you want to push your luck, you could maybe go with a 45w, like a 3630QM.
