Hey I'm planing on building a a gaming PC. It is my first build, but I want it to last for a couple years without upgrading. Should I wait and see for the new 800 series of GTX cards or get a 770 4gb or 280x if the price drops. My max budget would be about 375 USD for the gpu.

Thanks

When Nvidia first released that roadmap for Fermi, I determined that I'd buy the x80 of every new architecture, so I bought a 480 (Fermi), then a 680 (Kepler) and I intend to buy an 880 (Maxwell). That strategy seems to be working pretty well for me tbh lol. The 780 kinda pissed me off though cos using GK110 rather than GK104 was cheating imo, since all the other 7xx cards are just Kepler refreshes, just as 5xx were just Fermi refreshes...

Equally, I could look at AMD but I had a big falling out with them over drivers and a card that died a long time ago and I'm still not quite over that xD

Might as well wait. That said, you can always "wait a little longer" and something better will be coming.

I'm waiting because I have an ultrabook I can use in the mean time and there aren't really any games out right now that scream "you must play me".

Plus, if you wait you can save some more coin and perhaps buy the 880 instead of the 770.

Next gen GPU's will not be out for a LONG time in my opinion.  I wouldn't expect 20nm Maxwell or the equivalent AMD cards to be on store shelves until the end of the year at the earliest.  Could be wrong but that's my opinion.

I don't think its worth waiting either. It hasn't been that long since the new series from both sides launched.

Think about it. The GTX 780Ti is still a fresh card. The sales must be good enough with the AMD prove hike. It may be too soon to launch new products. That potentially be a long wait.

Personally, I'd wait. I built my computer around this time last year and then the 700 series GPUs came out a month later. It sucked. I mean, I love my computer but I probably would have waited should I have known, especially with GPU boost 2.0. My rig would have been completely different should I have waited. But it's entirely up to you. If you think you can wait, do it. If you absolutely need so buy a GPU now, go for it.

820m is a Fermi chip, GF117, it's a rebranded 720m, just like the 720m was a rebranded 620m, and the 620m was a rebranded 540m etc etc :P
