Boinc VS Folding@home

I just joined the LTT Boinc team and I was wondering which is better to invest in, Boinc or Folding@Home. Tell me why below to justify your opinion.

Boinc is pointless right now, there is so little profitability. You can look at other cryptocurrency, or just Fold.

Since when is Boinc a cryptocurrency? Are you thinking about bit coins?

In terms of which one is "better", i would say Folding@Home, since you are working to benefit others (with helping to find cures for diseases and whatnot), unlike BOINC where, for-the-most-part you are working to gain funds which benefit only yourself.

Although, as of recently (and as of always nonetheless) we can use more Folders, so i encourage you to help us out :)

Edit: Disregard this post altogether

what are you talking about? same goes for @Me1z, does everyone ever just confuse folding boinc and crypto currencies together in one big pile except for understanding that folding is non profit, boinc is non profit aswell, google it, folding isn't the holy grail.

i am currently folding but my vote goes to boinc, boinc just seems more interesting and fun, i like the diversity and the thought of being able to choose what you contribute to, as for crypto currencies, those are pretty much just a waste of electricity and resources.

Disregard that last part, old post. It isn't quite that simple, absolutes rarely hold true.

My understanding of BOINC is that it is not just finding potential cures to diseases like F@H, but a wide spectrum of projects which you could choose from. 5 computers working on a smaller spectrum of projects gets more work done than 5 computers working on a larger spectrum.

they wont necessarily get less work done, they will do the same ammount of work but they will make less progress on each individual project due to being scattered, there are lots of these open projects, everyone can't just shut down what they are doing to speed up the work being done in folding, just like a country can't just suddenly decide to pour their entire budget into cancer research because we need other things aswell :P, while working on other projects you might help astronomy, physics, whatever, in the end the same ammount of work is done, just for different things so theres less going towards each individual.

That's the point I was trying to make, and I think you sum it up the best. I don't think BOINC projects are less important, nor do I think everyone should switch over to F@H. I simply prefer F@H because of that greater chance of progress in a smaller group of projects.

I'd have to agree with SynapseBreak. Although I am relatively new to folding, one of the big reasons I joined is that the competitiveness amongst donors and teams almost makes it feel like a sport, but rather than wasting your energy running in a circle it all goes to helping cure diseases. Knowing that your unused computers are helping others is pretty good feeling. :)

yeah man, when I started folding i didn't really care about it but now it's like "ok, im in 418th team-wide, *goes to calculator* *Checks FAHControl* *adds PPDs fron all machines and does division* In 6 hours ill have these guys........" And so on. It's weird how competitive it feels.

I joined folding because I just wanted to help LTT. I found it cool that you could specify which diesase to help, (I chose cancer) and I get that good feeling because I'm actually doing something to help people in a big way, and having fun doing so. The only cost for me is that my bedroom is 8 degrees F hotter than the rest of the house.

Well, thanks. I guess after I get maybe silver in Boinc, I'll try out folding. I want to help the LTT team in every aspect :)

you see my point but at the same time you don't :P, there are lots of these open distributed computing projects, boinc just takes them piles them together and lets you choose beetwen them, heck folding could almost have been a part of boinc, i don't really follow your logic because they are all trying to do different things.

Err, my bad guys.   Sorry for not getting my facts straight. Disregard my post.

sorry for being so blunt, boinc is pretty much the same thing as folding just different projects, it follows the same principle.

hah, this reminded me of the time i made a topic asking about the most efficient dedicated computer to do either boinc or folding, people were like dude.. don't bother with boinc, it's just not worth it anymore, it's pointless, you wont make any money.. to which i went what??

My logic is that F@H has much fewer projects than boinc as a whole, and 99% of F@H's projects have to do with curing diseases and/or advances in the medical field. This allows for more progress in a more fine range of projects. That is why I personally prefer F@H. You may appreciate having the variety of choices boinc has available, but I don't because with everyone scattered less progress is possible in the same range of projects that F@H works in. Does this help clear anything up? I'm sorry if I'm not explaining properly.
