will 3gb/s work with a 6gb/s wire?

SATA should be backwards compatible, much like PCIe.

Even modern hard drives can't fill the bandwidth of SATA 6gb/s, only SSDs are capable of that. So an older hard drive wouldn't even saturate a 3gb/s. You should be totally fine

Don't worry the difference is mainly appearance only:

But the truth is that they all transfer the same rates, so it doesn't really matter at the end because internally they only have more cable to support the cable movement but not to transfer more data, "SATA 2" and SATA 3 sable transfer the same rates.
