Problems with connecting my second monitor

Hello,

I have an old monitor that i use as second display but it only has vga and my laptop only has hdmi. So u bought an hdmi to vga converter, When I use is with my laptop for school it works perfectly fine. But when I use is with my gaming laptop (Has an gtx 1050) It doesn't work. the screens is not being detected. I got it detected once but then both the screens (from my laptop and the second display) stayed black. Tried updating the nvidia drivers but is does nothing. What could i do to make this work?
