384 vs 512 bit

My question is if a 780 was 512 bit bus would it make a difference?

Yes, there would be more memory bandwidth meaning it could utilize more vram

Unless your'e getting the 5 gig 780 I'm pretty sure a 384 bit bus will be just fine.

well, if the 780 was 6gb like the titan, yes it would make a big difference

as it would mean you could use more of the Vram avaliable too you,

generally speaking, 2gb = 256bit bus

its been discussed on the forums plenty of times that 4gb with 256bit bus couldnt use all the Vram avalible, so 3gb = 384 bit and 4gb = 512 bit

If there were more vram it would help

Would it access the memory faster in the current generation of games. Otherwise is a modern game saturating the entire 384 bit bus

It means that you could have more VRAM since it a wider bus. You can still use 4GB of VRAM on the 384 bit bus.

290 has 512bit but only runs at 6.0Ghz compared to 780 that has 384bit but runs at 7.0Ghz.  At the end of the day they are pretty much equal.

With Vram it does make quite a difference though. There isn't much difference in ram overall.

 

Maybe not enough for 1Ghz to equal out to a 512bit bus, but it's a nice boost either way

yes, but... this improvements are much more noteables on the low/mid/high range cards

 

where you can clearly see the difference of power between

 

 

low - 64 bits

 

med - 128 bits

 

high - 256 bits (this is the old high end standard)

 

S high - 384 bits (this is the actual high end standard)

 

U high - 512 bits (this is the future high end standard)

Um, if we are talking about raw bandwidth, then the architecture doesnt matter at all.

A 512-bit bus running at 5 ghz effective has a 320 GB/s Bandwidth, a 384-bit bus running at 6 ghz effective has a 288.4 GB/s bandwidth.

Architecutre doesnt matter when we are talking about raw bandwidth...
