Low performance on 7970 BF4

Go to solution Solved by bamerx98,

Thank you everyone for the replies, I finally found the problem, it was my power supply going in to over current protection, basically cutting power to my video card causing it to throttle and really just killing my FPS. I fixed the problem by wiring my video card to the other rail of my power supply and everything is now good in the hood :D

So, basically the title gives most of the info, but I seem to be getting really low performance out of my 7970 running ultra 1080p I commonly am sitting in the high 40's and see drops in the the mid 30's is this just a 7970 not being enough or is there something else that could be the problem thanks very much everyone I'm just wondering if its time yet again to drop more money on another video card.

Maybe it's just the dev's are optimizing more the the newer cards. But then again the 280x is just a re branding. Maybe it's throttling?

Is there anyway too tell if a video card is throttling, like the core clock never moves when gaming, same with my CPU consistently making sure its not moving its stable at 4.9

There are programs like Asus's that can check the temp. Just look up GPU thermometer or something until you find one.

Well there's the problem (or the lack of) it's BF4. Don't worry about it then.

If it's just the ultra preset that's to be expected drop anti aliasing a fair bit and it'll get more reasonable frames, a friend had the same thing.

Should be better than what your experiencing, my 7950 OC does better (not bragging, just saying) While I use Ultra with 2xAA, when using 4xAA (actual Ultra) it doesnt get that low.

Changed Drivers, just to eliminate them as the cause...go back to the previous ones from the current latest ones...?

Back off the CPU overclock? Maybe there is a small hiccup issue thats hardly noticeable anywhere but BF4?

Disabled Core parking? (All CPU's enabled, not half,...react pretty well with BF4 is the only game that I find reacts well to core parking disabled)

New update messed up BF4 performance. There are numerous complaints on Battlelog forums so I guess we'll have to wait for a new one.

If it was universally happening to ALL, I'd agree, but without it happening to ALL, his issue could be still be something else.

Were not here to guess.

I have a HD 7970 and I played the whole campaign on ultra and never went below 50fps the average fps was about 61. Maybe your card is overheating.

Check the temp of your card when your running bf4

When you install drivers, do you uninstall the olds, restart and install the new ones, or not bother & go over the top of the existing drivers... Because thats not a good idea...

Even if you uninstall them, sometimes things can be left behind, and screw with newer driver sets...

Download AMD's clean driver utility, run it, restart and re-install your latest official or beta drivers again.

Read up on core parking here

pl_parkcontrol.png

Core Parking is a sleep state (C6) supported by most newer x86 processors, and newer editions of Windows. Core Parking dynamically disables unused logical cores, turning them back on as the load on the CPU(s) increases. This technology is very similar to frequency scaling, in that it seeks to throttle the CPU's power consumption when idle.

Unfortunately, Window's default power profiles are far too aggressive when it comes to parking, especially on workstations. A large number of complex parameters control when a core is parked, so it is not hard to imagine these being less than ideal in many situations. And, Yes, core parking is enabled by default even in the High Performance power profile.

The core parking settings in Windows are exposed as parameters of power profiles. That means you can, for example, disable core parking for the High Performance profile, but leave it enabled for other profiles.

ParkControl will let you easily edit the core parking settings of your Windows PC’s power profiles.

By default on Windows, its enabled, and probably causing some slight performance loss with BF4 as its widely known to give an improvement on unparked cores.

Do you use Catalyst control centre, or use a program like MSI afterburner to look at your GPU statistics,. using MSI's graphs you can notice in more detail any issues compared to Catalyst Control centre...

Like GPU usage over time, whether it is throttling a little or a lot... And may even provide some options that fix your issue...

You are right, but I assumed this was BF4 update issue, since OP didn't mention when the performance issues started.

Maybe a R9 280X BIOS flashing would make a bit of a difference

Lets not throw glass at an already broken window just yet :P

While it may help, it should be working as is with his current bios, and if he does do a bios update, the issue may still arise if its not the cause.

I see your point of narrowing it down however, Bios flashing some cards bug out & also knock out the HDMI port from being used only giving a blank screen... thank god for dual bios's!
