Does motherboard matter when u overclock gpu

Go to solution Solved by pstarlord,

mmmm in general, not really.  One of the biggest reasons mobo matters so much when overclocking a CPU is the VRMs of the motherboard need to distribute the power evenly and efficiently to the CPU.  Over clocking can make it harder for them to handle the increased voltage needed.  Since graphics cards tend to have their own VRMs, your motherboard doesn't need to really do anything other than connect the card to the system so the information can pass through.

That being said, if you're over clocking your GPU, odds are you're over clocking your CPU as well, so your motherboard may not support as high of an over clock of your CPU if it's VRM's are not as nice as another mobo's VRMs.  So, your mobo does have a direct effect on your CPU's OC, in turn  has a direct effect on your system's overall performance, and indirectly could effect your GPU's performance.  If the mobo has poor VRM's it can also increase the temp inside your case, and that doesn't help anything.

Your cooling solution probably has as much, if not more of an impact on your GPU OC than anything else...well, the build quality of the card also counts.  haha.
