Why did nVidia skip 8xx series ?

Is it just me or did we make the jump from 7xx to 9xx ........ Why skip the 8xx ?

Yeah and on mobile platform the 800 series was quite present.

Lots of laptops with 880m, 870m and 860m.

Lack of competition? Didn't fit into their release schedule?

 

The 800 series existed as laptop GPUs.
