I have recently moved into a new house and am very confused about what this socket on the wall is,

the house is pretty old but still modernised.

That's a wall socket for a co-axial cable. It probably leads up to a TV antenna on the roof.

Someone pulled the wire out without disconnecting it first. It's really not a big deal and if you unscrew the box and disconnect the wire the broken connection should come out pretty easily. Once it's out reconnect the wire inside again and you're good to go.

Yeah, co-axial. Looks like there's a bit of broken end in it, should pull out and the socket may be ok.
