I don't know whats happening here, I think your power supply didn't come with the right cables.

it might be kind of hard to see but this cpu cable that came with my psu has two slightly different connectors on each end but both my power supply and my cpu power on my motherboard connect using the connector that is pictured on the top. is there a cable that has both of these connectors on each end? is my motherboard not compatible with this power supply or something? what should i do?

All connections with standard parts should be universal and compatible. I think one of the sides is specifically supposed to connect to the PSU/Mobo which should tell you which side connects to the others. I believe that the cable in the first picture connects to your power supply and the second, to your motherboard. Just try it out and you should find the solution.

I tried connecting the one in the first picture to my power supply, which worked, the my cpu which also worked but the connector in the bottom picture would not connect to either

So the top pic+psu worked, and the bottom pic+cpu worked? Is that what you're saying?

Where are you trying to connect it to? This sounds to me like its a PCIe (video card) cable.

It should be labeled CPU or something. Get out all of your cables and make sure you have everything. There should be a CPU cable...

lets see the motherboard you're trying to plug it into, and what port on the motherboard it won't fit into.

I have no clue how the top picture cable isn't plugging into this port. It has the right connector shapes and everything.

So what I'm seeing here is that you need a cable that needs the same connections on both sides. It needs to be the top picture's connections but on both sides.

There should be since it's what needs to be plugged in for the PC to run. Its called an 8 pin EPS cable.
