noob temp question - delidded 7700 with LM idling around 28c

So... for my TV PC the 7700 (non K) arrived yesterday and I delidded it + used Conductonaut since I already had the delid kit and LM laying around and figured maybe it would run a little bit cooler for less fan noise.

I notice the cores seem to settle about 27-30c at idle, in a Silverstone GD09 case (haven't done my top panel mod to put a vent above the CPU cooler yet) with the Noctua NH-C14S cooler (only 1 fan installed blowing up from below the fin stack).

Being very unfamiliar with the locked CPUs as well as air coolers these days, are the temps fine given the lack of good airflow and that this is not a large cooler to begin with? Asking because I've only delidded 3 CPUs so far (8086k, 7960x and now this 7700) and it seems like the previous two idled a bit lower more like 23-26c in the same room with ambient of 21c - but those both had massive water cooling so I'm just not sure if my LM application was worse or the overall setup of this rig is just going to run warmer due to the air cooling it has.

If those cases had more ready access to room ambient air which I would expect on water cooling then that is probably the difference. The 7700 is going to be more limited by the ambient temp inside the case, which in that small of a case can easily add another 5-8c to the temps.

  • 4 weeks later...

so... I decided to hate life and move this system into a Node 202 case (picked up a used Asus Z270I ROG Strix mb for $70) with a Scythe Big Shuriken 2 CPU cooler.

With the fan set to the 'silent' profile in BIOS, on light use CPU core temps are ~ 37-40c with 23 c ambient. I'm assuming that's fine given the slightly warmish room, 'silent' mode CPU fan (700-800 rpm) and tiny restrictive chassis?

Since this case actually has more width than the previous ATX case, I was able to swap back to the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X, which is idling around 55 C, fans are not on (I think they don't kick on until 60c) and I literally can't hear the CPU fan at all. Got a Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM fan coming tomorrow to swap out the stock Scythe fan since it moves more air and is quieter (not that I can hear this one anyway but hey... $20 for more headroom I guess).
