New Plex Media Server

What are some good servers to run PLEX? I am new to PLEX. I would like to be able to run at least 3 TV's @ 1080p Resolution. I was thinking about maybe an Apple XServe, because I hear PLEX runs best on Mac OS.

If you need me to follow up on something, please quote or tag me.

You can run Plex on almost anything, your pc, a pre built NAS or a scratch built rig, if you are only interested in Plex then just install the Plex server on your pc and leave on during viewing hours if you have a need for a 24/7 storage server as well as Plex then you would look into any pre built NAS but some are better than others for Plex so read the reviews or if your up to a custom build you can rune unRAID and run Plex as a docker and have a storage server at your disposal as well as running VM's if your into that sort of thing

Do you have a budget?

Plex really doesn't run best on a mac, so idk why you would get a mac here, there normally a bad value, and the xservers are pretty old now.

Whats your budget? How much storage do you need? Do you need transcoding?

My Max budget would be $300, I'm more looking for used hardware.

4TB's to start would be nice.

Is that included in the 300?

Your best option is used desktop, kinda like this one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-7010-MT-Intel-Core-i7-3770-3-4GHz-16GB-RAM-500GB-HDD-WIN-7-PRO/113442271639?hash=item1a69afb197:g:V8wAAOSwEp5cD82C:rk:8:pf:0

Then put your os of choice(id put linux on it) and add some hdds for more space.

The storage is not included in the price. I am looking for a server that is rack-mountable.

Then how about a r710?

THis one looks pretty good https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Poweredge-R710-Virtualization-Server-2-66ghz-12-Cores-64gb-500gb-2xPSU/372520973455?hash=item56bbfaf48f:g:bHEAAOSwLztbUfi5:sc:FedExHomeDelivery!95014!US!-1:rk:3:pf:0

You need to swap the raid card to user drivers over 2tb though.

Do you want to use software or hardware raid? Id probably go software raid here, and get a h200 or h310.

Then get a h200, you also need sff 8087 to sff 8087 cables as the perc 6i uses a differenct conenctor.

OSX is awesome for Plex. I have a 960ti Skylake Hackintosh that is my daily driver (Till next year) and it runs Plex media server to an internal 6tb Seagate.

If you really want OSX + Plex, have you thought about a lower specced PC you can hackintosh?

That just ain't true, there's no magic-sauce that makes it run better on OSX than some other OS. If you want to use OSX for it, go for it, but don't fall for the "it runs best on OSX" - claims by fanboys.

Yep I have both and although my macbook is the sh@# for some things Plex does not gain anything here and I certainly would not be looking at a mac sever they look pretty but thats about it, buy a cheap pre-built with a cpu that scores appropriately (passmark) for the number streams and stuff it with drives and your off to the races

Does anyone know about rack mountable servers instead of a pre build pc? I have a server rack it needs to fit into. I am hoping to add a 10GB SFP nic into the server.

The world is your oyster, there are a ton of deals out the but the Dell R710 is a pretty solid buy but it really comes down to what type of hardware your requirements are and if you want to buy cheaper and add what fits your use case or buy something that is plug and play and ready to go

Direct play will not need a lot of CPU, transcoding will. If you make sure you can run direct play on all your devices, you can have a lot of fun using a Dell Poweredge 2950 and invest the extra money in storage.

By the way I highly recommend using ZFS for creating pools in stead of the onboard RAID cards. Make sure your storage controller can act as an HBA in stead of RAID.

Also, 10Gbit is a luxury I personally wouldn't invest in if my budget was 300. Getting 10Gbit from your server to your computer may cost as much as your budget depending of the distance between them.

My Plex server is in the last post of the LTT Storage Rankings topic, I run gigabit as well.

How do you plan to use your 10GBe setup? switches are ridiculously expensive, if you are just planning to run your server and say 1 or 2 pc's that are in the same room then you can do a peer to peer setup with little money an bypass a switch I have my unRAID server and 2 pc's running 10GBe between them

Well, three non-transcoding streams would pose no problem to something like a Dell Poweredge 2950 III or a HP DL380 G5.

You can run FreeNAS on a (mirrored) USB key inside the server, and have the storage bays to put your Plex jail and Media folders. Look for a 10Gb NIC that is supported on FreeNAS.
