Linux Domain and Network Printer Problem

  1. I decided to install Linux on my laptop. The first problem I have encountered is adding my Linux OS to my Windows Domain, I have everything setup on the server end possibly on my laptop.  Here is what I am using right now, i am currently using a Dell Latitude D530 with Zorin OS 7, which is a ubuntu based Linux Operating System
  • The error log I saved:

  • In short I get the error "DNS_ERROR_BAD_PACKET A bad packet was received from a DNS server. Potentially the requested address does not exist." when I try just SKULL.

  • When I try with SKULL.LOCAL I get "Lsass Error Network name not found.. Failure to lookup a domain name ending in ".local" may be the result of configuring the local system's hostname resolution (or equivalent) to use Multi-cast DNS. Please refer to the Likewise manual athttp://www.likewise.com/resources/documentation_library/manuals/open/lik...for more information."

This is the only couple of problems I am having with this portion, I tried using a static DNS Server, Static IP... I even tried to do some research on this problem and still didn't budge anywhere. I also edited the resolv.conf file which lead no where. I want to expand my networking into linux as I gain more knowledge of the Windows Side of Networking

     2. The next problem is adding my Network Printer. The configuration of my printer setup is with a Windows Print Server, I have installed all the required components on Windows Server 2008, which I don't know on the client side of things, but the error I get is "Bad device-uri "lpd://ADMINISTRATOR1/HP Deskjet D1400 series"." That is the only error I am getting right now. I went through Windows Firewall, and it has been allowed for LDP Service.

Any help will help me break ground on a little bit of Linux/Windows Networking.

Hi, you'll need to install something like samba on linux, because windows doesn't want to see other Oss natively, samba makes your linux pc recognisable on the windows network.

List out what is in your network config:

/etc/network/interfaces

Also

/etc/resolv.conf

Then type the following commands

/sbin/ifconfig -a

and

/sbin/route -v

This will tell us what is what with your networking.

If you configured your network with Network Manager then list what is there for your NIC(s). I personally hate  Network Manager and prefer to do the networking by hand because under some cases Network Manager will kill your network settings, live and learn.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Results:

I did the /etc/network/interfaces, it was completely blank.
