Hello,

I just built a new pc and something went wrong

Case Thermaltake Core X31 Tempered Glass Edition

AMD Ryzen 2700X, 4.35GHz, 20MB, Socket AM4, Wraith Prism cooler

Gigabyte Aorus AX370 Gaming K5

Asus ROG Radeon RX 580 STRIX GAMING

Solid-State Drive (SSD) Kingston UV500, 480GB

HyperX Vengence Red 16 GB

----  Main Issue ---  When I turn on the pc after a few seconds seems like it cuts power for a brief moment but doesn't shut down and I also have no post ----  Main Issue ---

I already rebuilt the pc just i case i did not connect something right and I pulled out the video card ( video card is not the issue, its being used in another pc )

--- Second Issue ---  I managed to put some thermal paste on the pins of the cpu the second time i took it out but i cleaned it as best as i could but i do not think that should be an issue since it didn't work from the start even if the thermal paste went all over after I applied a ton of it and didn't realize it .   --- Second Issue ---

But just i case how can I better clean the thermal off the pins of the cpu ?

Any help with this is welcome

You got a X370 motherboard with a 2nd gen Ryzen. That could be the source of the first issue. You can take it to a shop or get the AMD Bootkit.

For the second issue, you're supposed to apply thermal paste on top of the CPU, between the CPU and the cooler, not the pins

As mentioned I'd look into your BIOS not being updated for Ryzen 2. Also, was your thermal paste conductive? If so, shorting pins with it is not good if there is still enough there to bridge connections between pins. How did thermal past end up there?

Hello,

Yes I know where the therl paste is applied but my friend somehow touched the pins with the paste on his hands when he took out the cpu that is how it got there and for the x370 I did not  think about that I tough that all chips are backward compatible with all AM4 chip-sets

Can you tell me more about AMD Bootkit ?

The AMD Bootkit is a service from AMD where they give you an old CPU (i.e., athlon x4 950) so you can put it in and update the motherboard BIOS. After that, you give the CPU back to AMD and you put the 2700X in and the BIOS should be updated.

This process can take several days however, so I'd just recommend taking it to a shop and paying a small fee

The paste is Arctic Silver, I dont really know if its conductive i'll have to research that

Thank you,

I will see what I can do about the bios probably I will have to take it to a shop for a bios update then

Do you know how can I clean the CPU pins ? any kits for that or do you have any advice ?

You can also bend the pins. Be careful. Rubbing alcohol (high %) helps clean and wont harm the CPU. If that alone doesn't remove any residue, soak a paper towel in the alcohol or something and try to gently brush in between the pins. Like I said, these pins are fragile, while I don't think a paper towel will affect it at all, if you are clumsy and stick a thumb in them, they are definitely bending and possibly snapping off and you just made it a whole lot worse.

Most people are extremely cautious with these pins. Break one and your CPU is probably dead for good.

Does a 88 %  alcohol from the drugstore work ?

Yes. I've used 70% extensively with TONS of hardware and no issue, so 88% is fine. 99% is recommended though.

And keep in mind although this thermal paste on pins issue may not be the cause of your problems, it is certainly something to take care of. You don't want thermal paste on your pins ever.
