You could have programs running in the background. This will slow down the  computer significantly.

We need a substantial bit more info than the nothing you've given us to work off of.

If you have 173 Chrome tabs open, I've found your problem.

If your tentacle-porn "homework" folder is more infested than a whorehouse, there's your problem.

If you're overheating to the point that everything's being thermal throttled to within an inch of not functioning, that may cause an ever so slight decrease in performance.

If you're running a single core system with 512mb of memory, on a 3500RPM drive, I've, once again, found your problem.

If it's all the above, you've just got to throw the whole thing out and start over.
