Hey, my system is about 4-5 years old now and I'm wondering if I should upgrade or consider buying a brand new pc.. Last year I upgraded to a ASUS GTX 1080 turbo so that is still very fresh. My other specs are : i5-4690k, ASUS z97-K-CSM ATX, 16GB RAM, 750 Power supply, Seagate ST2000DX001 2TB. I mainly game and stream and I have been noticing a bit of lag in my gaming and streaming. I'm also pretty sure my HDD is dying because it's pretty loud when I boot up my pc and when I feel my case, I can feel sudden vibrations in the area where my HDD is located.

I am aiming towards the i7-8700k for gaming, streaming and editing. I would also need help picking a motherboard if the upgrade is worth while.

Yea, I was planning on getting an SSD and maybe a new HDD. I'm leaning more to the 8700k only because I don't know much about AMD and from what I read online (not sure if it's true or not) is that intel cpu's are just better for both gaming and working. If I were to upgrade to the 8700k, what mobo would you recommend?

Intel is better for gaming but AMD is generally better for productivity. Obviously it's a bit more complicated than that with some workloads favoring Intel but for the most part if you are spending X amount of dollars you can get a more powerful cpu for work oriented tasks by going AMD rather than Intel.
