Ideal GPU For 3D Rendering/CAD

Go to solution Solved by FroggyXD,

Just Found my Answer.... Wow lol

Well to start things off I recently built a new system. I still have my old system but I took the graphics card out. I am planning on giving my old Computer to my dad because he does a lot of 3D Rendering and CAD work for his Construction  Business and he is doing it with the Windows Surface 3. My old computer system Build was really just meant for gaming, but I don't see any real reason why It can't be used for 3D Rendering Projects and CAD work. My old Computer has a

Intel i7 6700k Skylake

16GB Corsairs Vengeance Ram

Asus TUF Z270 Mark 2 Motherboard.

Hyper EVO 212 Air Cooler

120GB SSD Sandisk

2TB HDD

Nzxt S340 Elite Case

Was a GTX 1080 TI Gigabyte OC Gaming Black. So my main Question is Would it be fine to use either a GTX 1060 6gb Card or a RX 580 8GB Card? Or should I try and go for a Quadro Card? And if so, Which kind? Anything Helps Thanks.

Honestly, modern gaming GPUs are so powerful, anything 1050/1050ti+ should work perfectly fine. Looking at 3D models, even complex ones, from many different angles is honestly pretty easy when compared to the stuff gaming GPUs are built for. Sure, the lower you go, the higher the export/render times, but if you're not in a huge rush all the time, the 1060 6gb is a great choice. The extra VRAM and boost to clock speed makes it worth getting over the 3gb model, in my opinion.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

I figured that a gtx 1060 6gb could get the job done. But I am wanting to know how well it gets the job done. I am looking for what will be for the best overall. If card A Will do fine then how well would card B do? I am looking for Not the Quickest Render times because if I want that then I might as well get something like a p6000 and a thread ripper. But I am also not looking for something that will get the job done but drags it feet while doing it.

More CudaCores goes a long way, Which is why I was on my 980Ti for a while cause it had more CudaCores than a 1080, but I went for the 1080 Ti shortly after it launched.

That said any 10 series card 1060 6GB and up will get the job done.

Then how well would a RX 580 Do vs a 1060 6gb?

Short answer, about the same, except it has 2gb more memory and draws more power than the 1060.

This is, of course, comparing it to the 6gb 1060. The 580 would probably fair better than the 3gb version.

I would have mentioned the Vega 56, but there's a significant cost difference between that and the 1060. It's more comparable, as Linus said, to a 1070.

Will you be doing more CAD? Or more gaming? Quadros are great workstation cards, but from what I remember, they fall pretty short when it comes to gaming...or at least they used to.

This brings up a curious thought I just had...why not dual monitor, one monitor on a cheap Quadro for CAD, one on a GTX1060 for gaming? Not sure if there would be driver conflicts, but it might be worth looking into.

But I think I will be getting either the Vega 56 or the p1000. But I got the answer I was looking for

?

nVidia's gaming cards have always fallen a little short on CAD use, mostly because it would infringe on the profits of their purpose built Quadros. I don't know much about ATi cards, so I can not give any input on their cards.
