Gameboy and DS batteries?

I don’t get it. If I don’t charge or use a LiPo for an RC car in about a year or two they puff and become unstable. Nimh batteries slowly fade and alkaline batteries die/ooze. So why is it my Nintendo and Gameboy I haven’t charged in 9 years are perfectly  fine and hold a charge?

because gameboys are awesome and dont take much to run so unlike a rc car it should last longer a lot longer with a single battery if you want to test this hook up the gameboy battery to your rc im joking dont do that

I don't have an answer for you, however, my Gameboy Advance SP has been sitting in its' case with games and what not for 10+ years. Powered it on the other day for giggles, and battery was fully charged, so something about Nintendo batteries are magical.

Perhaps they're old enough to still be Nickel-Cadmium batteries? Those where good batteries imho, highly underrated and I find the NiMH that replaced them to be far inferior. NiCd could easily last 10 years sitting on a shelf. I've some ancient, long idle, still working cells myself. I'm not saying sitting idle for so long is good for them, but NiCd could easily survive that.

even these older gameboys already use lithium batteries, the main difference to other devices is that they only need very little power so even a degraded battery is still powerfull enough and will cause no problems.

 

Lithium batteries are also extremely good at holding a charge even over a long time, the only thing they dont like is sitting at a full charge, maybe the gameboy never charged them all the way full to preserve the battery.

Yeah that would make sense. Keeping Lion batteries with a buffer in charge and discharge capacities helps lengthen the lifespan
