PS4 audio output?

Gershy13

I just bought a new avr, and it supports dts hd ma, and dolby truehd.

my ps4 is connected to it over hdmi, and then its connected to the tv over hdmi.

My question is, what should i set as the output in ps4 audio settings?

My options are:

Linear PCM 5.1 or 7.1

Bitstream DTS 5.1 or 7.1

Bitstream Dolby 5.1 or 7.1

Its only a 5.1 receiver and supports all of those formats.

I use the ps4 for games and also blu rays and Plex.

What setting should it be set to? I want to make use of the DTS HD MA or Dolby TrueHD tracks on blurays.

Thanks

Gershy13

If the PS4 is hooked up to an AVR, you want to choose either Bitstream DTS or Bitstream Dolby.

This means the PS4 will pass the audio signal thru to your AVR and the AVR will take care of decoding.

thanks, i was reading online and people said that i should choose linear pcm, because then it will be completely uncompressed and the ps4 doesnt have to do more work...

But i always thought it should be bitstream.

Im just not sure if i should choose dts or dolby...

ill be playing both on the ps4 (from plex)

It's the other way around.

PCM = PS4 does the decoding and passes on the signal

Bitsream = PS4 passes on the raw signal

Oh wow ok! I've been misled! I just can't decide on Dolby or DTS. Thoughts?

I don't think it matters that much, just go with DTS.

I read up on this online and apparantly the PS4 will switch that setting automatically if for a example you chose DTS and the BluRay you're trying to play only has Dolby.

Ahh right ok... I'll chose bitstream DTS 5.1 then right?

That's a great price. I paid 344€ for my Denon. It supports 7.2 but I only use 5.1. Very happy with it though.

What speakers do you have?

Never heard them but they do look incredibly nice. I have the Mission LX-2 for the fronts and years, Mission LX-C as the center and a mivoc Hype 10 G2 subwoofer.

Nice! I just need to get this setup configured properly, as it doesn't sound right currently...

Also keep in mind that the bitstream is carrying additional metadata. Like information for mixdown or dynamic compression.

That will be lost if you choose PCM.
