Threadripper 1950x Sluggish Performance?

I'm hoping to get a little bit of insight into what has been a disappointing upgrade so far. I recently upgraded from an Intel based system, i7 4930K LGA2011 running on an ASUS ROG Rampage IV Black Board with 2 780 TIs, to my current setup:

  • ASUS Zenith Extreme x399 board
  • AMD Threadripper 1950x
  • 32gb G.Skill 3000mhz 4x8
  • 512GB Samsung 960 Pro M.2 SSD
  • ASUS ROG Poseidon 1080 TI

I'm running a clean, new install of Windows 10. It has become really clear that overall, my performance is far worse now than it was with my previous setup. While benchmarks such as my CineBench score are obviously significantly higher, and match expected numbers for the 1950X, overall system performance is extremely problematic. Opening Photoshop CC, or Lightroom/Premier Pro is seemingly slower than ever, and interacting with the programs (e.g. I just clicked to close Lightroom) will hang the entire system up for a few seconds (this past test, probably 10+ seconds, mouse becomes completely unresponsive hanging up the system completely). Excel can cause the same issue, games, once they are running, usually no problems, but it seems that any time the system is under high load momentarily, the entire system hangs badly. This was never an issue I ran into with my Intel based system mentioned above.

I'm hoping that someone might have some thoughts or insight into known issues or potential causes of this, as the upgrade that I was quite excited about has been an expensive letdown so far...

Thanks!

Sounds like something other than CPU directly, and I'd have to wonder about the disk system. Have you tried running disk benchmarks? Just do a quick crystaldiskmark for example and post it here.

Other possibilities:

Download and install chipset drivers if you haven't already:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows 10 - 64

Consider the Samsung NVMe driver also:

System hangup any time you try to load something for sure sounds like a disk issue. I would guess either some program is running in the background that is using up the disk (Had this issue with a anti-malware program in the past) and system freezes any time something tries to load is what I got during that.

If you are using drivers from the flash drive, your issue is an older version of AI Suite enabling HPET which causes problems.

The solution that worked for me from another forum:

Open CMD as an administrator

run:
bcdedit /enum

if you see 'useplatformclock' set to true then run thats your problem

I ran:
bcdedit /set useplatformclock false

bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock

you might get away with just running
bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock

Thanks for the responses so far!

@porina here is a fresh benchmark for the boot drive, I do have the latest Samsung and chipset drivers installed:

That doesn't really tell me whether you have the HPET issue or not. You will have to run the command in the instructions I posted.

@Legendarypoet it does look like that is set to true:

Before I make that update, could you point me to the thread you mentioned detailing the issue? I would like to understand the root problem and what I'm changing before I apply that fix.

Thanks so much for the help!

I do not remember exactly where since this thread is a catch-all for ROG Zenith issues, but I'm sure you could search.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1636566/asus-rog-zenith-extreme-x399-threadripper-overclocking-support

Your other option is to reload 10 and use the AI Suite from the website if you are not comfortable. I can say with 100% certainly that this work though as I have this board and CPU and had this problem.

Rest assured that he's offering a safe solution.  HPET is basically a hardware timer.  Sometimes it leads to instability on certain platforms, so the commands basically disables it.

Thanks, yep wasn't concerned with safety so much as wanting to understand why it was an issue. That thread you linked is really helpful info, thanks so much for all the help!

No problem! Good luck with the system. Should perform like a champ once this is resolved.

Super frustrating when you've just spent the cash.

Hope you didn't have to look too long.

I thought it could be something related to the Dual Channel Mode i am running right now.

Unfortunately i am waiting for G.Skill Kits to come back on Stock where i live, i hope it does not take too long.

But it seems that everything is pretty much more responsive now, no more lags so far! I built the System yesterday with the same Board and CPU as this person from the topic. Thankfully i was able to find this Thread quickly!

The Corsair Vengeance RGB Quad kits run @ 3200 if you're looking to get the most our of RAM. (I have the same setup as well)

Just to give you more options in case those are in stock.

A little off-topic question, but have you Updated to the Windows Creators Fall Update?

As i have built this TR System yesterday, i have installed directly this Windows Creators Falls Version. It seems that everything was working fine, but now after using the ASUS AI Suite to tune the System, i am running through countless of issues. Such as GPU Driver failing to start once on Windows or when that doesn't happen, i am experience a terrible lag of which i cannot even open Firefox for you to have an idea.

When this "Super Lag" event happens, i had the chance to try out the CPU-Z Benchmark, and for some unknown reason, this 1950X did only 450 of Multi-Thread during this "Super Lag" event.

BIOS is updated to the latest version.

Would you recommend me to install the Windows - Pre Falls Creators Update in order to see if it fix? Thanks.

I'm running the creator update. I had to reload graphics drivers, but no other oddities. Which latest BIOS? The one from the site or the one from the ROG forums?

Windows 10 apparently has some performance problems with high-core-count CPUs. Some of the stuff in this article sounds like what you've described, but I don't know if the cause is the same: https://randomascii.wordpress.com/2017/07/09/24-core-cpu-and-i-cant-move-my-mouse/

This makes windows boot much faster and programs are initially faster. HOWEVER, for me, 10 seconds after sign in everything gets horribly unstable.  This method therefore doesn't work for me very well for some reason.  I'm going to try it without the 4.0 GHz overclock profile and see if it works.  Someone on another thread mentioned it was unstable for them on OC but worked at stock clock.

Yeah 4.0 is not stable for everyone. I can do 4.1 stable, but my friend w/ a 1950X cannot pass 3.8 without massive instability.

I can run the system at 4.0 with useplatformclock set to true, but when trying to apply the fix setting it to false, it becomes wildly unstable, screen flashing black, programs going bonkers etc.  Luckily I was able to change it and reboot.

I did just try the fix at stock clock and it works.  So I'm having the same issue as the other user on another thread.  His OC was more modest than mine though.

So, I was able to use Ryzen master to OC up to 4.1 stable.  For some reason I cannot apply that OC directly from the bios with useplatformclock set to false though.  I don't get it **SHRUGS**...guess I'll mess around with some other bios settings and see what's up eventually.

UPDATE: bios OC at 4.1 running stable by simply changing the multiplier.  Basically, being lazy and applying their pre-made 4Ghz OC profile causes issues for some reason.

DUDE, I had the same issue, I switched from a i7-4790k to the 16 Core Threadripper!

The PC was so slow in opening apps (chrome took 5-10 seconds to start)

I MANAGED TO FIX THE ISSUE BY INSTALLING THE SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE AND TURNING ON THE S.M.A.R.T TECHNOLOGY FOR MY SAMSUNG 860 SSD 1TB.

FUNNY THING: I contacted AMAZON.CA and told them that the performance of the threadripper was not as I expected (after 2 months of having the CPU)

the AMAZON rep was soo00o nice and gave me a full refund for both my CPU and Motherboard (~$1700) and told me that I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO SEND THE CPU AND MOTHERBOARD BACK!
