UEFI vs Legacy

I recently noticed I have Installed my Windows10 as Legacy, but I can install it as UEFI.

So my question is, would this be fine? I mean what do I miss by using Legacy instead of UEFI?

 

Or should I reinstall Windows10 as UEFI now while it's early?

Eufi boots faster. Maybe 5-10 seconds. If this matters to you you can do it.

UEFI has better security and support for things like GUI BIOS with mouse and fast boot

I just reinstalled my OS to UEFI. My boot time still is slow.

When I restart my PC it takes 30 seconds to get to the login screen.

 

What more can I do to improve this? I remember way back my i5-4460 & Asus Mobo, it only takes 12-15 seconds.

Keep in mind that: Restart or shutdown have different timing. Turn on from shutdown are faster than restart as the OS should partially hibernate itself when you shutdown. Restart doesn't.

 

Security software can also slow down system startup speed, and hardware drivers.

 

But that aside, with a decent SSD, your system should boot in ~6sec from the moment you hit the power button to the desktop fully loaded (assuming clean install of Windows with all the drivers installed, and no startup programs beside Windows Defender and OneDrive).

  • Use Intel GPU instead of a dedicated GPU as this needs to boot, and graphics card manufacture doesn't give 2 crap about boot time because reviewers don't check for this. If reviewers don't review, don't expect a feature to stay or they care. Example: 16x and 32x AA on Nvidia GPUs doesn't exists anymore.. it stops at 8x. Because reviewers who compared with AMD cards never go beyond 8x as AMD doesn't support it. No one noticed since 2015. Have a look yourself.)
  • If you have a SATA based SSD, make sure it is on AHCI mode.
  • Make sure your XMP setting is set to "Profile 1"
  • CSM is not enabled
  • No Legacy feature enabled
  • Fast boot (or whatever "fastest" settings that the UEFI your motherboard wants to call it) enabled
  • You are using Windows 8 or 10

(other motherboard features are shown after..  but essentially it is a video that the motheboard supports all UEFI features, and not the old BIOS, or a UEFI/BIOS hybrid monstrosity, or UEFI but lacks features)

I couldnt find XMP and Fast Boot in MSI Bios.

I could find them on my Asus Haswell tho.

I'm thinking it was the current GPU that i'm using. It says something about GOP. Seems 8400GS isnt GOP capable or something.

How does this GPU still works? It is so old. So yea, naturally, it was before UEFI hit the PC market. You are looking at MINIMUM GeForce 500-600 series with you crossing your fingers that the vBIOS chip on the GPU is programmable and large enough so that you can request from the manufacture the vBIOS for UEFI if they are interested and have it (up to yo to figure it out in extracting the vBIOS, send it to support, and update with the returned version). What a hassle those days were.

 

So yea, you need to set your system to legacy mode, as your hardware is now not fully UEFI compatible. CSM (Compatibility Support module) needs to be enabled, in other words.

So yea, you need to set your system to legacy mode, as your hardware is now not fully UEFI compatible. CSM (Compatibility Support module) needs to be enabled, in other words.

 

I will be replacing the GPU soon and will check how long to boot again. Hehe. This is a temporary GPU while waiting for a good deal since Ryzen doesnt have an iGPU. :)
