New to servers/NAS

Okay dear LTT community i've been a PC gamer for about 7 years now and i'm pretty confident and aware of those ins and outs. But today i'm here because i've just started a business with my family and i'm the Head of IT currently i'm running everything off of my personal PC, hosting a website with squarespace (Thanks Linus) and im happy with what i've been able to implement so far. I've now transferred all data to a synology NAS. I'm looking into a server for secure storage of sensitive client information.

TL:DR I feel like a total noob now i've been looking into servers and NAS setups. All i've got is a synology NAS setup running RAID 1 for all of the business documents but i'm going to have to figure out a server solution to store sensitive client information securely.

Any advice would be hugely!!! appreciated.

That's a good idea for sensitive data.

I wouldn't recommend to start with the big thing directly, if you want, you can build one small server to play with first so you can test everything and make your experience before deciding to go for a homemade solution.

As @AnonymousGuy said, Google Drive for Enterprise for all your use case for storage, however if you really want to you can have a local backup to backup things from google so if your internet goes down you still have access to your companys Data.

If you want to use your own server then look into FreeNAS. It'd basically require ECC compatible hardware (ram, motherboard, and cpu) but assuming you've got the hardware for it and set things up properly it will be stable. You've also got some vitalization through the "jails" system. I'm not too sure about security though, I mean iirc it's possible that a compromised jail can get access to the root system...
