Lost Windows Activation

DeadlyPilot

So this PC was upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10, and we had someone change out the CPU and MB. Now Windows 10 is no longer activated. Tried having Microsoft recover it from the OS, they couldn't find it. It's not showing on the Microsoft account either. So if I revert back to the old hardware, will I be able to activate it again?

I need to know because I have a key, but don't want to override the old one and lose it if I can still somehow recover it.

Is it an oem pc?

I'm not sure, but my understanding is that no matter what key you previously had (either OEM or Retail), the free Windows 10 upgrade makes it an OEM key. Don't quote me however.

I no longer have the license. It was upgraded automatically during the free upgrade period.

Old PC should have COA sticker. And no, upgrade doesn't make all keys OEM. If it was OEM, it still is. If it was retail, same thing.

With you it sounds like OEM which is tied to old mobo.
