Weird Residue when Cleaning Thermal Paste off Dark Rock Pro 3

So I got my dark rock pro 3 for my 6700k about 1 month ago. Temps weren't the best so I went and remounted it a few days ago and rotated it 90 degrees to see if temps would improve. When wiping the old thermal paste off (using the stuff that comes with the dark rock pro 3) with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol on it this happened.

The rubbing alcohol would rub the thermal paste off, and it would start evaporating like it should, but eventually it would stop evaporating and then it would start turning dark before ending up like this. The black stuff wipes right off, I wiped it with rubbing alcohol again and the same thing happened. I ended up just wiping the CPU cooler with alcohol and then wiping the black stuff off with dry paper towel.

 

Note that the same thing didn't happen on the CPU.

 

Does anyone have any idea as to what's happening? If I should be worried?

At a guess the alcohol is reacting mildly with whatever they use to tint the nickel with. Presumably you would eventually remove all the coloring and be left with a normal nickel finish.

That doesn't sound good lol.

 

Is there anything else I could use to wipe thermal paste off in the future?

I tried using one of those that you use to clean screen protectors and there was so much dust on the thing and stuff it was just a pain to use so I went to paper towels.

 

As well there's permanent thermal paste marks on the microfiber cloth I used... :/

Eh, I doubt it's doing anything to the nickel itself so it won't cause thermal issues, it's just the bottom of the plate would, with enough cleaning with alcohol, be the same color as your IHS instead of black. Performance wise nothing would significantly change.

The bottom of the plate isn't black though :P 

 

It's a silvery color not black. The black is the residue or whatever that alcohol is leaving behind.

Move the heatsink away from anything else, put in under intense light, and then wipe half the baseplate off before taking another picture. A normal nickel baseplate is a bright silver.

Idk lol, my CPU cooler is mounted onto mobo and CPU right now :P
