Air cooling skylake-x

Planning to get my first HDET system with the i7 7820x .

Given the CPU is rated at 140 W and some review had it >220W

will air cooling like the Noctua D15 or the dark rock 3 do the job?

Is it absolutely necessary to use an AIO cooler?

No, it's not necessary. Either of those would do perfectly fine.

The NH-D15 performs similarly to many 240mm AIO's and even some 280mm's.

The DR3 doesn't perform as well but should still be enough.

Gamers nexus found that a good 280mm aio was JUST good enough..  ON A FRICKEN 7740X 

 

The 7820X will buuuuuurn on air

Both of these air coolers are pretty much as good as liquid coolers do there isn't much better you can do...

 

I think the issue is the same as the 7700k, that the die doesn't have proper contact with the IHS which causes the high temps.

As good as a decent 240mm, not close to an exellent 280mm.  Its up to OP and it'll probably still run but dem temps.

The difference between 87c and 90c is also just 3 degrees.  It can be significantly more depending on the conditions as well.
