Can my motherboard support Core 2 Duo.

I have a motherboard Axper XP-M5S661FX with a Pentium 4 506 2.66GHz. I was wondering if it is upgradeable to a better processor like Core 2 Duo or at the very least a Pentium D.

Current specs of the machine

Pentium 4 506 2.66ghz

2GB DDR 400 RAM

On board Sis661fx graphics

160GB SATA HDD

CD ROM

400W PSU

It is a socket 775 motherboard...

Going by age I would doubt it, pentium d probably, c2d most likely not at all. Can't find my info from a  quick google search either

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige

Hey,

Those really are some old parts. ^.^

is a new one to expensive or do you like the old one that much because there are many prebuild cheep pcs that should be a lot better then your old one.

My guess is that it would work only with Pentium 4 processors with 533 Mhz FSB. Based on the weak VRM (see only 3 phase and lack of capacitors), I also wouldn't try using power hungry models.

If you're really lucky, maybe it will support Pentium D 805 (quad core 2.66 Ghz), with a 95w TDP :

Model Number sSpec Number Frequency L2-Cache Front Side Bus Mult Voltage TDP Socket Release Date Part Number(s) Release Price (USD)
Pentium D 805 SL8ZH (B0) 2.66 GHz 2 × 1 MB 533 MT/s 20x 1.2 - 1.4 V 95 W LGA 775 December, 2005  HH80551PE0672MN   $143

Otherwise, you'd probably have to stick to single core or single core + hyper threading

You should find some of these processors on eBay by searching for that part number or by the code on the 2nd column  (ex SL7YU for P4 505)

And you can find how they compare using http://cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

So based on that page, the board supports 800 Mhz FSB as well, in which case the processors here should work :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Prescott_.2890.C2.A0nm.29_2

I'm talking about the Prescott (90nm) , Prescott 2M and maybe Cedar Mill (65nm) .. but I wouldn't trust that board to work with processors that have a TDP of 115 w (it's listed in one of the columns)

No after doing research on your motherboard, Your motherboard only supports a Pentium 4 on LGA775. With specs that Old, try Linux or if you want to use Windows, Unfortuately you will have to do a system rebuild with new components as a Pentium D or C2D Wont do. But if you do a little research on ebay, you can find a great deal on CPU, Ram and motherboard

Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah...I am quite fond of this PC. My father bought this PC back in 2005 and it was the fastest PC around the house until 2009 when he bought a Compaq CQ40 with a Core 2 Duo processor (using it for college now)

Nowadays I use the Pentium4 for storing pictures and playing some old games like GTA3. I managed to install Windows 10 Professional on it though.
