Does anyone know if Intel's Optane memory will cache a non boot drive?

I was wondering if you can use Intel's Optane memory as a cache on a non boot drive?  I am sure that many of you have a small (128-512 GB) boot ssd, and a large mechanical (several TB) hdd for games and storage.  If you can cache non boot drives, then this may be the biggest benefit Optane has for enthusiasts.

Also this is my first post, I am a fan of Linus's content, I am not sure why it took me this long to sign up.

Really?  That is crazy, thank you for such a fast reply.  I am planning on making a video discussing the potential benefits of Optane, but for anyone that has an ssd boot drive, I cant find much.

People aren't testing much more than a few attempts.

Personally, I'd wait for the SSDs to roll out if you're looking for performance.

Are you talking about larger capacity Optane ssds to use as a boot drive?  Yeah, that would make sense.  I just find it very surprising that you don't have an option for specifying with drive to cache.

I believe the Optane caches whatever is used most often regardless of what drive it is on. I haven't tested for myself, so I can't say with certainty.

I see, I will have to do more research, as I am wanting to make a video discussing the potential benefits of Optane as a cache drive, and I don't want to get my facts wrong.  Thank you.

I think I found the answer to my question.  http://www.anandtech.com/show/11227/intel-launches-optane-memory-m2-cache-ssds-for-client-market

Optane Memory caching is currently only supported on Windows 10 64-bit and only for the boot volume.

This was stated on the third paragraph.

I just realized, I should have edited my previous post instead of double posting, sorry about that.

  • 5 months later...

I just bought the optane, and it needs to see you drive on the side of connection and that drive apparently needs to be the boot drive.

Unfortunately my SSD boot drive is in a special slot in an eight Asus prime X299 deluxe, so it's not seen as a stat drive.

Nonetheless I doubt the optane would be a benefit to an existing SSD drive and I wanted to see other drives I have in my system and they help them speed up.

so this might be good if you have a typical hard drive as a boot drive on the sata connection, but I don't really see how it's going to talk to other drives in my system and help speed
