How Amazon Scummed Me Into Using Corsair.

Alright, Im in the process of my new build bought every think a week ago and started building today. I started opening the boxes and eventually get to my NZXT x52 box. I looked at the outside quickly and see some braided tubes, I open the box and see rubber tubes I think ok maybe some misleading images. Then I take out the heatsink and read Corsair. I think 'wtf amazon' I then think that someone returned the box with a lower quality corsair cooler to make profit. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think thats what happened or is it just amazons mistake when packaging or something.

Amazon didn't necessarily scam or scum or whatever you into getting a wrong AiO. They were just under the impression that they had a Kraken X52.

how exactly would they get a corsair cooler into a x52 box

Hmm. That's very weird, then. Meh, just send it back to Amazon; they should take care of what you want.

Years ago I knew people that would buy ram from walmart, pay cash, pull the stick off and put it on the old ram, put it in the package, and return it. The reps wouldn't know better. I assume the same from amazon. Old rebox the old tech trick.

well if they put in their real financial information to purchase it, likely. There's less and less methods to be truly anonymous in payments to popular retailers. Amazon doesn't do paypal, and for ebay, paypal has been requiring more and more proof of information over the years. Then there's the delivery address (could be fraudulent)

And A-holes like them are the reason that the rest of us have to show a driver's license to return anything at Home Depot, Best Buy, Toys R Us and a growing list of retailers that believe their right to not get screwed outweighs our right to not have a nationwide firm building profiles on us.

It's worse than that, imo, because they don't tell you what's really going on when they run your ID. They're not checking to see if it's valid. They could give two shits. They're uploading it to a third-party database run by a nationwide analytics firm, which builds a profile on you based upon how often you return something, what you return, and what the dollar value is. That third party firm then calculates how big of a risk you are to be committing return fraud and pushes that database out to every retailer that subscribes to their service. Those retailers, in turn, simply pass along the "don't accept this return" message and send you on your way.

And that's why, on the rare occasion I see someone online bragging about swapping old or fake items into a box and returning it, I give them a few pieces of my mind. Thanks to them, I can't return broken crap to Best Buy (and we have no other tech store here, so it's that or nothing in a pinch) without having to read the riot act to whatever poor sap wanders up to the counter and tells me that he can't accept a return on that defective thingamajig without my photo ID, even though I'm holding a receipt linked to a transaction containing my credit card info and a Best Buy Rewards account with my name on it.

this shit makes me mad, and I hate having to give up my DLN, DOB, and address to these corporations. Might as well give my SSN.

Another good example is buying guns- background checks "The government deletes the information after the check".Yah, sure they do. I doubt it. Whatever. What I do know is the store get a TON of information they can pawn off, including targeted ads (pun intended) simply based on what you bought. I bought a certain gun locally and had ads in my email from a different company for custom parts for that gun in particular. Didn't even research online for it first or anything, saw a used savage 110, bought it, ads. This is why I now will buy online and then do the transfer through a local gun shop down the street. I trust him to handle my social and DLN more. In fact, I think I can not put an address down and just the FFL address. And yes, I know you don't have to actually put your social on a background check, but you DO NOT want a case of mistaken identity for one of those, and it's safer to do so.

It's scary to think that yes the government know I own guns, but likely just has info on how many rifle and handgun background checks I've done if they keep it, but these private companies know exactly what guns I own
