I5 4690k and gtx 1070 144hz display

I currently got a i5 4690k and a 390x and i'm planning on upgrading to a gtx 1070 and a 144hz display. My question is can my i5 4690k supply the 1070 with enough frames that a 144hz display is worth it?

It will always depend on the program itself. That said, go for it. Having more than 100Hz will happen more often than not.

sure. however if you want to squeeze every possible frame rate from the 1070 an i7 such as the 4790k will be needed. but the 4690k overclocked will do fairly well in unlocked games.

even 100 Hz will be difficult in anything but light games, if OP wants a full 1080p 144hz gaming a 4790k or 4770k  clocked at 4.5 ghz is the answer.

That is a completely arbitrary assumption that you're making.

not really, high fps gaming puts more load on cpu making it cpu bound. 

 

edit- forgot to mention fluctuation, i7 4790k will have a better minimum.

Not for every game. It is largely dependent upon the engine used and how well it is programmed. To add a blanket statement to a situation is erroneous.

 

Look at CSGO. Gets 300Hz on an i7. Completely CPU bound, but I can only play at 100Hz b/c my i5 arbitrarily decided that 100Hz is the limit...

If anything I can try to see what fps I get with the 4690k and if it's not enough I can save some more and get the i7

That's the right way to think. If you ever do a full hardware upgrade, go for the best CPU you can buy. But don't be afraid to make a GPU upgrade (within reason) when you need a performance boost.

if you are getting a 144hz display, it would be justified getting a cpu upgrade to something that can run higher end games over 144 fps than csgo, first test out the 4690k first to see if it reaches the performance you want.

Maybe if you're running at Ultra, but if I used low settings I could get well over 100fps steady on my i3-4160 and GTX 750 Ti on modern games.  I only upgraded a few months ago.

1080p, which is what we're talking about.  And by modern I mean games from between 2012 to 2016, with the exception of some pretty intensive games like Rise of the Tomb Raider.  Essentially everything except the standard benchmark games (which are chosen because they're hard to run), or games that are just horribly optimized like Arkham Knight.

 

Of course none of it mattered, because pairing that with a TV just meant a lot of screen tearing.  I would only test it out to see what I could get.  I usually ran AAA games with custom settings ranging everywhere from Low to Ultra for a steady 60fps.  I've never been a fan of presents lol.
